We had the good fortune of connecting with Bu Lu and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Bu, how has your background shaped the person you are today?
I’m from Harbin, China which is a place where storytelling is deeply rooted in the culture, which played a significant role in shaping who I am today. Growing up, I was surrounded by a rich tapestry of stories, whether they were told through family traditions, local folklore, or the vibrant film industry. This environment fostered my early fascination with narratives and how they could be visually represented.

My upbringing instilled in me a strong sense of perseverance and a love for learning. I was encouraged to pursue my passions and was given the freedom to explore various forms of art and expression. This support helped me develop a keen eye for detail and a deep appreciation for the technical and creative aspects of filmmaking.

The challenges I faced along the way, from finding opportunities to showcase my skills to mastering the technical aspects of cinematography, were pivotal in building my resilience and dedication. My background and experiences have made me a versatile and adaptive cinematographer, always eager to push the boundaries of my craft and tell compelling stories through my lens.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I specialize in cinematography, bringing stories to life through a blend of technical expertise and creative vision. My work spans a variety of genres, from westerns and realism to contemporary urban dramas, allowing me to adapt and find new ways of visual expression that are deeply rooted in the story and script. I am known for my ability to craft visually compelling narratives that resonate emotionally with audiences.

What sets me apart is my dedication to understanding the essence of each story and tailoring my visual approach to serve it best. I place a strong emphasis on teamwork, believing that filmmaking is a collaborative art. This collaborative spirit ensures that I work closely with directors, writers, and other departments to create a unified vision for each project. Additionally, my continuous efforts to enhance my technical skills, particularly in lighting, allow me to be flexible and innovative in my shot and frame choices.

One of the achievements I am most proud of is winning the Best Cinematography award at the LA Indie Film Festival for my debut project. This recognition affirmed my visual creativity and technical abilities, motivating me to keep pushing the boundaries of my craft.

Overall, my passion for storytelling, commitment to continuous improvement, and collaborative approach are what set me apart in the field of cinematography.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
If my best friend were visiting the area, I would ensure they had an unforgettable experience, blending the best of local attractions with a taste of rich cultural traditions. One of the highlights would be a visit to Haidilao Hot Pot, where I would introduce them to the vibrant and communal experience of Chinese hot pot culture. Hot pot is more than just a meal; it’s a social event that brings people together around a simmering pot of broth, where we cook a variety of fresh ingredients like meats, vegetables, and noodles. I would explain how this tradition dates back over a thousand years and is deeply ingrained in Chinese culture as a symbol of unity and togetherness. Sharing a hot pot meal is a way for families and friends to bond, catch up, and create lasting memories, making it an essential part of Chinese social life.

Throughout the week, we would explore a mix of must-see sights and local favorites. We’d start with a visit to iconic landmarks and museums, offering a glimpse into the area’s history and art. For dining, aside from Haidilao, we’d sample a variety of local and international cuisines at renowned restaurants, ensuring a diverse culinary experience. In the evenings, we’d check out some popular bars and lounges to enjoy the nightlife. Additionally, we’d spend time at scenic parks and outdoor spots, perfect for relaxation and capturing beautiful views. Each day would be filled with activities that showcase the area’s unique charm, ensuring my friend leaves with a deep appreciation of both the local culture and the special significance of traditions like hot pot.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My family is incredibly important to me because they provide me with opportunities to see the world and pursue my dreams. Despite not having a personal interest in movies, they have always supported my passion for filmmaking without hesitation. Their unwavering belief in my potential has given me the confidence to take risks and strive for excellence. The resources and opportunities they have provided, from investing in my education to offering the tools I need to hone my craft, have been instrumental in shaping my career.

Beyond material support, my family offers emotional stability and inspiration. Their constant encouragement helps me navigate the unpredictable and often stressful nature of the film industry. The values and ethics they instilled in me—hard work, integrity, and perseverance—guide my approach to both my personal and professional life. Their love and pride in my achievements motivate me to keep pushing forward, making every milestone even more meaningful. In essence, their support and belief in me form the foundation of my journey, making my success a shared accomplishment.
