We had the good fortune of connecting with Christine Göös and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Christine, how has your background shaped the person you are today?
I grew up between two quite contrasting worlds that influenced my career choices and interests later on.

My father and uncle are renowned Italian clowns who come from a long line of circus artists (and were just awarded a lifetime achievement at The Monte Carlo circus festival earlier this year). My grandfather, Enrico Fumagalli, was a clown and an actor who appeared in Fellini’s films like Clowns and City of Women, and often partied with the famed director in Rome during the golden age of Italian cinema.

While we had our home base with my mother and in Finland, I spent around three months of each year touring with the circus in Central Europe with my sister, immersed in the world of traveling artists, acrobats, and creatives. It is a microcosm of its own, rooted in family values, tradition, and nomadic lifestyle.

My parents always wanted us to have a proper education, and I was the first person in my family to attend college. I majored in Linguistics with minors in media and business, and found my footing as an advertising creative to merge the art of storytelling I’d grown up around with a career with earning potential.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
My career in advertising hasn’t been a linear one, as I’ve held both creative and marketing roles both on the agency-side and in-house at technology companies. There are a few through lines, however: I’ve always found myself in foundational positions where I’ve been tasked to build the baseline marketing practice, brand presence, and awareness in the US market for companies that were more established in the European market. That was the case for both Billion Dollar Boy (where I currently lead US marketing) and the paid social company Smartly.io where I previously ran Americas marketing. Aside from taking on foundational roles, I’ve also found myself working at social-first companies throughout my career, two of which had successful exits in 2019 and 2021.

I got my start in advertising at TBWA Helsinki, and my first five years were a whirlwind of global work that won over 30 awards, positioning the agency as one of the network’s crown jewels. I got to work with people from different offices, including New York, and that’s how the idea of moving to the U.S. started to take shape.

The process of securing a role in a company willing to sponsor a visa was tough and extremely humbling. I’d come off a successful year in advertising, and I thought that the recognition and accolades alone would be enough, but that wasn’t the case. It took me 1,5 years of countless interviews, hustling, and negotiation to finally make the move.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I have a soft spot for Venice as I stayed there my first time in Los Angeles. I’d rent out a quaint beach-side Airbnb and shop on Abbot Kinney, visiting the Christy Dawn and Farm Rio stores, and grab brunch at The Rose.

My version of the city is definitely romanticized Lana Del Rey meets Daisy Jones meets Eve Babitz version of L.A. I’d go thrifting for 70s cotton dresses in Silverlake, followed by drinks in Chateau Marmont with my podcast co-hosts.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
First, I have to shout out my House of Content co-hosts Janni Widerholm and Melissa Kontu, they are incredible creative leaders and my sounding boards for navigating careers as women in advertising, I learn constantly from our conversations on the podcast (and in our group chat).

Second, I have to mention my husband Jones Krahl who runs the creative department nationally at Deloitte Digital. He’s been my support system and number one fan since the day we met, and I always run my ideas and career moves by him. I admire his business acumen and level of craft when leading complex creative initiatives.
