We had the good fortune of connecting with Ritzy Periwinkle and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Ritzy, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking
I think of risk as something that pays off at the end regardless of outcome. You either get the desired outcome or you don’t and you learn from that. Being a creative means constantly taking risks. I left my well paying music industry job back in 2006 to start Ritzy Periwinkle. Since then I’ve traveled and exhibited around the world, been able to pivot into different creative roles and during this pandemic, took a risk to launch another podcast, Word To Your Mama. I feel you can’t make progress on your dreams if you’re not taking risks.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I’ve realized that as a creative, I like to express myself in many different ways but the thread that runs through everything is that I’m a story teller and I love bringing people together. I always have my hands in different projects in a variety of mediums whether they are personal or projects for clients. If I had to say anything about my brand, my brand is just me. Me, being as authentic and genuine as possible. I can’t fake the funk.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
If I had a friend visiting the city I’d for sure take them to check out some Tacos spots. So many to chose from but a couple of faves are Taco Zone Taco Truck or Kogi Truck (Love to Chef Roy Choi). For some homestyle Japanese goodness, I’d take them Yuko’s kitchen. For the best Turkey Patties in town, Caribbean Gourmet at the Baldwin Hills Crenshaw Farmer’s Market on Saturdays is the place.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I wouldn’t be where I am today if it wasn’t for my friends that have turned into Familia. The college fam, my relative, LMC aka Nah B Productions, Ya Heard Fools and so many more. Huge shout out to my two Supernatural Bears (Husband and son) that hold me down on the daily.
