We had the good fortune of connecting with Lisa Schyck and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Lisa, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
The Joshua Tree Dream is a for-profit business endeavor designed to promote and support artists, musicians, and nonprofits in the Hi-Mojave Desert. As I got to know more people and organizations, I discovered the many challenges they were facing: artists struggling to get work and make a living, and nonprofits struggling to raise funds.

I wanted to create a project that was for, about, and beneficial to the community. Thus, I created the 3-book series titled “Glimpses of the Joshua Tree Dream.” The book is a vehicle to support the people of the Hi-Mojave Desert. Twenty percent of my book sales proceeds will go back to the community. Part of my mission is to also create and sponsor events to bring the community together and help musicians and artists promote their work. Any remaining funds will be reinvested into creating more projects.

My goal is to create and strengthen a community that lifts each other up, cross-promotes and helps bring in funds to support organizations and individuals in achieving their Joshua Tree Dream.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
Being a self-publisher, self-promoter, and self-distributor, as well as the creator of the lifestyle photography book “Glimpses of the Joshua Tree Dream,” I wear many hats, to say the least! What sets me apart is that my business is based on giving back, helping lift people up, and making a difference. I believe we all deserve prosperity, whether it comes in monetary or spiritual form. The book is a lifestyle photography book that showcases creatives authentically living in the Hi-Mojave Desert.

The biggest lesson I’ve learned along the way is to trust my instincts better. I’ve faced many challenges, but I’ve continued to put myself out there, seek advice, and listen. Ego can be a huge hindrance when it comes to true success. Being a quick learner always helps too! I’m also very determined and can be laser-focused on getting things done. When I say I’m going to deliver, I deliver. When I say I’m going to do something, I do it!

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Giant Rock in Landers, then a Sound Bath experience at the Integratron, Red Dog in Pioneer Town for tacos, then a trip into the Joshua Tree National Park and end the day at the Tony Pony in Yucca Valley.

I really think the Giant Rock Meeting Room in Flamingo Heights has great live music and an interesting crowd! Plus they have great pizza. My husband ran into Jason Mamoa one time there when he was picking up a pizza.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
MBCAC the organization that organizes the Joshua Tree Art Tours. Artists have been participating in this event for over 20 years now. There are currently 185 showing their work in their studios the first 3 weekends in October. MBCAC has been working very hard for many years and they now have a totally new board, working out to make these tours better than ever.
