We had the good fortune of connecting with Sara Schelin and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Sara, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking.
I’m definitely not afraid of taking a few risks here and there. I’ll never forget the look on my parents face when I was 27 and told them I was moving to Australia with the my Australian boyfriend who was 13 years older than me and I had been with him for less than year! Yes that happened… what I thought would be three months and a trip of a lifetime turned into 12 years and countless lessons learned. Although that chapter in my life came to an devastating loss, I gained a beautiful son, Cooper. Living aboard teaches you about who you are, what your limits and boundaries are . I have learned how to adapt, I consider myself a resilient and resourceful person when life gets hard, which it does for me often. Instead, I find a way.I know my self worth and I am willing to invest in myself. In the past, if I wasn’t feeling appreciated at a position or respected I was not afraid to walk away. I have always believed in myself enough that a new a better opportunity would come. I am guided by my principles. I don’t believe in accepting every social expectation. I want to be myself and have my own style that is ever evolving as I age.My style is mostly inspired by places I’ve lived in or traveled through the beaches of Orange County, the eclectic Long Beach, and different pockets throughout LA. The laidback vibe of Australia and the cosmopolitan streets of Europe.
After I returned to the States from Oz in 2018, I knew I needed to surround myself with my family in a nurturing environment and that was in Joshua Tree, California. I have been here for 6 years now and think this place is so healing and magical. My favorite little place to go is Cedar and Sage Yoga Studio. It’s a studio where after you leave you just feel like a better person, ya know? I was taking a class one day and during that time I was really struggling with my anxiety and the instructor said something that really resonated with me “trust your body and take up as much space as possible”. In a world where you’re assigned a cubical you need to give yourself the space you need to shine and express yourself. That’s why I am passionate in creating my own style through makeup, skincare, fashion and music and I want to to help others find their shine. Making time for yourself and your self-care is so important for mental health. I know it is for mine. I’m inspired and driven to organic skincare & makeup products. I love sharing my knowledge of skincare and makeup with others so that they can feel and look their best. That’s why Instagram has been so useful to me. I love the process of making content that I’m excited to share and confident about. I can get lost in it for hours!Just finding the the right music can take me a hot minute, my partner and I go try to go shows regularly. Music is everything. I really have a feel that song sends the right energy (The hard part is being a perfectionist and knowing when to put the phone down). I’m still learning so much and I only recently had some brands send me a little love via their wonderful products that I can share with others. I excited to see where this will take me.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
It all started out as just a little passion project that I would do on the side when I got home from work. It was a way for me to fill a creative side of me that doesn’t always get fulfilled at my day job. I love creating content that sparks emotion, excitement and a relatable connection. For me, skincare and makeup were easy choice when I decided to embark on this social media journey. The idea of helping others feel and look their best inside and out always has excited me. I have always been a huge advocate for self-care and I think it is closely tied our mental health. It’s important to take time for yourself everyday as it will positively effect your mood, even if its just taking the time to do your skincare routine. I want people to know that having a good skincare and makeup routine doesn’t have to be overwhelmingly or daunting you just have to use quality products and be consistent no matter what your age! When I first started posting I had no clue what I was doing, and to be honest I still don’t but it’s getting easier. I watched so many How-To’s YouTube’s and still do, you can find anything on YouTube. I learn about my products in depth, I would research them on multiple sites, reach out to brand, watch countless dermatologists and makeup artists for lastest trends and tips. And tried every and any product I could get my hands on. I tried to really understand who is on Instagram? What problems could they face? What information do I have to help them? I definitely run into my own obstacles and can be challenging. When I first started pitching to brands I would be devastated if they ghosted me or declined me now i just look at it as opportunity for something brighter. You have to have thick skin. No joke. You are putting yourself out there for the world to critique so anxiety can be high, but so rewarding at the same time.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Living in the Joshua Tree area is a trip. It has changed so much since I’ve been here. It used to be so sleepy and now everyone one from LA wants to come up on the weekends to play. You can definitely see and taste the difference in the food. Hands down the first place that I always bring anyone who is visiting me is to the Legendary Pappy + Harriets. They have great good old BBQ plus I seen some of the coolest shows ever there. You never know who will be playing at Pappy + Harriet’s from the Paul McCartney to The Descendants.

Another little hidden gem in the high desert is the Tiny Pony. I am obsessed with their charred cauliflower and shrimp tacos. It’s a chill little place with funky cool vibe, pool table and back patio. Totally popular with the locals, especially for their weekday specials. Another fave is Yucca Kabobs, I might be guilty of ordering from them more than I should. I love Mediterranean food, it just so fresh and so satisfying. You can’t come to Joshua tree without going to the National Park. Grabbing a coffee and pastry at The Dez will give you a good amount of energy to walk around the park.

If pizza is what we after go to SkyHigh Pie in Joshua Tree. This pizza seriously took me back to Rome. It’s light and doughy and has amazing crust. The sauce!! And please do not forgot a Cannoli on the way out. There’s always amazing organic produce at the farmers market as well as beautiful handmade textiles and jewelry at the many boutiques in town. Later on, you can always catch some music at JT Saloon and enjoy a cold drink.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
It does take a village. I would not be where I am at today without my parents. They have always given me a safe place to be myself and have been invaluable mentors for my son. Of course my friends for inspiring me daily with their own styles and confidence. And abundance of support. My partner, for always being my ride or die. For putting up with the late late nights, and random edits at 3 am. He is always honest, even if what I created sucks…he’s not scared to tell me and I love him for it. He also respects the amount of time I need to invest into Homeglowbeauties and I appreciate that. There are so many people, including my therapist that have been instrumental in my life.
