We had the good fortune of connecting with L.a Khalil and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi L.A, what inspires you?
I’m inspired by the great city of Los Angeles. To see the amazing art and history, the city encourages you to think outside the norm. With that being said, it’s also the needs of Los Angeles that inspire me to be the best creatively and humanly. The homeless crisis needs every hand possible if we’re ever going to see the city come back to the level that it once was. Seeing the people, the youth living in tents, missing out on school, I could relate to it because I was once in their situation growing up.

What sets me apart from others is why I make music. In music and in Hip-Hop today, it’s used as a stepping stone toward something else. See, Hip-Hop was a way to express ourselves from police brutality and the other various hardships we as black people have endured. My songs, especially rap songs have a purpose, my lyrics have a meaning. However, my music endeavors do not stop at Hip-Hop, in recent years I’ve made music across different genres like Pop, Soul, Latin as a way to challenge myself and learn more about myself. What was challenging was accepting that I do not sing like Michael Jackson and what made it harder was finding someone who did LOL. Thankfully I’ve found and secured a healthy relationship with an artist Luka Maric who I’ve made 2 albums so far. My brand is just as simple, Love.Always K. Giving the love to others that I wasn’t given when I needed the most. When you support my music and merchandise, I put proceeds back into school and meal programs.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I think a cheat for this question would be the Grand Central Market. With so many cultural foods you have the world in front of you. A cool spot to chill would be the Observatory and The Last Bookstore. I’d get us to The Americana in Glendale for a movie and some In-N-Out. The last day would be a day trip to Santa Monica. Breakfast by the beach, some roller coaster rides, and Ice Cream, most definitely a vibe.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Pauly’s Project is a DTLA-based organization that’s led by the wonderful Paul Avila to help combat homelessness as well as to de-stigmatize homelessness. He is truly an Angel. He has a son, Pauly, who was born blind and with autism, and I know from having a brother with autism how difficult it can be. Paul is a blessing to the DTLA community, it’s that simple. I’ve had the privilege to volunteer several times, giving out clothes and food, It was a reminder of where I came from at one point in my life.
