We had the good fortune of connecting with Carlos Cardoso and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Carlos, is your business focused on helping the community? If so, how?
I believe that fun and structured exercise classes helps children and adults to understand the importance of an active lifestyle. Becoming an elite athlete is secondary, tho the interactions that children are going to be exposed to during the sessions, also teaches them to respect each other’s space, as well as developing social and emotional skills.
“Active children, are happy children”. I won’t remember exactly, but I once read it, and to me it makes total sense.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I am former professional soccer player, and after having played in Brazil, and many other countries in Eastern Europe, I was hired by an UK company to teach soccer in the US. I am very grateful to have had this opportunity, which helped me to meet people who became family.
It’s super exciting to see the development of a child, physically and emotionally, and I figured that children love structure if you know how to implement. After identifying the need for a more complex fitness program for children, I started Coach Carlos Fundamentals.
Even with challenges such as having to get to clients on a bike when I didn’t have a car, or being asked not to handout flyers about my program at certain places, I consider myself very lucky because my clients often spoke highly about my services, which created great opportunities to work with great and exclusive individuals and high end pre-schools/schools.
The main message that Coach Carlos Fundamentals has is that an active lifestyle starts early, at home, and will make a difference physically, emotionally and socially in the adulthood.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I’m very sports/physical activity oriented. That said, I’ll always bring people to the beach, Venice, Hermosa, Santa Monica as my first choices. I like RD Kitchen on Montana, Tangaroa on Washington Blvd, as well as Hatchet Hall for a good drink.
For fun and games of pool, I often try to go to Hinano Cafe in Venice, or JP’s in Santa Monica.
If it’s winter time, Mammoth Mountain is always my first option.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
On my very first session, my mom was there watching because at that moment in my life, I was going through and emotional hardship, and she came to California to check on me, to make sure as I was doing well. So first and foremost, my shoutout goes to my mom, Cecilia Cardoso.
Secondly, my sister Gloria Cardoso was the one to design the first logo, and till this day, gives me tips on how to conduct my business in a professional manner.
At last, my wife, Isabel Cardoso, who as doctor of Physical Therapy, is a huge source of information, and support at home, and sometimes with me during the classes.
So, I’m very happy that my business is family oriented.
