We had the good fortune of connecting with Kristen Lane and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Kristen, how do you think about risk?
I’m quite cautious when taking risks; I like knowing whats next for me and I like to prepare myself for all outcomes. I struggle with anxiety and naturally that comes with being an over thinker. I have talked myself in and out of many risks. But Senescence was the one risk I didn’t take much thought on. During the time I discovered I wanted to become a floral designer I was trying to learn about social media marketing to do as a side hustle while also working full-time at a media agency as a coordinator. Then one day I found myself putting together table arrangements for me nieces ‘berry first birthday’ and fell in love with the process. Of course I had made many arrangements before with flowers from Trader Joe’s for my loved ones, but this time it was different. Something clicked for me and – literally the next day I took the risk to start Senescence. Which is the name I chose when my fiancé and I initially had the idea of starting a floral business back in August of 2023. Senescence was brought back out of the idea box – but this time this idea plans to flourish.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I am a floral designer based in Los Angeles, I work with flowers and botanicals to create floral designs that stand out and push beyond what you see on a daily basis. I am a self taught florist which has given me the freedom to allow my style to develop and evolve from the jump. Being self taught is so great as a creative because there are no boundaries, no guidebook, no barriers molding me into someone else’s vision. I would say that my style so far has been described as organic, sculptural, and unique. Throughout this process, I am most proud of believing in myself even when my anxious thoughts were telling me I don’t have what it takes. I am proud of my motivation to keep learning, proud of listening to my instincts, and proud of following my passions even though it’s not easy.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Oooo – if my bestie was visiting me for a whole week it would look a little something like this! As an LA native I take pride in this itinerary.
Definitely need to take them to my favorite Thai restaurant in Thai Town called Ruen Pair when they get here. I would plan a cute chill day in Highland Park; start with coffee from Civil, check out the shops around there, grab some lunch at Folliero’s Pizza on Fig, and end the day with a couple drinks at the vinyl spinning bar – Goldline.
Then I would do a local farmers market run – have a romanticized ass picnic at Lake Balboa Park or Lake Hollywood Park (I <3 picnics) – water color painting and def some chill tunes playing behind our gossip.
For a night out karaoke at Brass Monkey is always a good time. If we’re looking for somewhere to go dance, we’re either going to The Virgil or Honey’s at Star Love.
My fav LA spots I rave about:
Fav sushi – Kazu Nori
Fav Deli – Mario’s Italian Deli in Glendale
Fav coffee – Cafecito in Atwater
Fav matcha – Tea Master in Little Tokyo
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Wow – the amount of people that comes to mind is crazy. Honestly, I would say of course my fiancé – Charlene, my mom, my sister, my amazing friends, the floral community for being so welcoming and real. And lastly my late father – who continues to inspire me everyday and has generously gifted me with his rad creativity and the gift of creating through my hands.
