Meet Karla Sandoval | Dancer/performer

We had the good fortune of connecting with Karla Sandoval and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Karla, how has your work-life balance changed over time?
As someone who has loved dance her entire life and quickly became my whole world, with time I have learned that having “normal” activities incorporated into my day-to-day and nourishing communities outside of dance helped to the development of my art in such a deep level, by balancing my work with my human activities helped my art grow in directions that I could have never expect, I find it so important having hobbies other than dance and making friends outside the dance community has pushed my art into a new direction.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
This is a new season for my career, I am starting a new project of my own where I am trying to explore the different ways my movement can translate into different bodies and different grooves. With that, I think that’s one of the things that sets me apart from others, my movement is a fusion of all the teachers/dancers I have had the privilege to learn from.
This has come with challenges such as always having a hard time trying to define my movement or categorize it when necessary but I learned with time that I don’t need to put myself or my work into a box, in dance and art there are so many variations and things yet to explore.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I have been living in NYC for over 3 years now and I have my favorites now, Salt’s Cure for breakfast, after walking the beautiful streets of the West Village, walking up to Soho and maybe running into a pop-up, lunch would definitely be at Ruby’s (the one on Mulberry st is my favorite), walking down to Chinatown and Little Italy, getting a slice at Prince st pizza it’s a must.
For a different day explore Williamsburg, Domino Park, ice cream at Gentil, and go vintage store hopping.
There are many more, Bushwick for bar hopping, a cute picnic in Central Park, and maybe a day trip to Rockaway Beach.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Coming to the close of a season in my life, I’d like to dedicate shoutout to my friends from school, who have grown with me over the past three years and who have supported each other in every way, I wouldn’t be where I am in many areas of my life if it weren’t for them.
