We had the good fortune of connecting with Emily Bowen Cohen and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Emily, why did you pursue a creative career?
Since I was young, I’ve always sorted out my feelings through creativity. I would put on a puppet show for my twin sister, or I would draw a picture that illustrated how I wished things to be. As I got older and started trying to sort out my complicated identity – I’m Native American and Jewish – I continued to pick up my pen. It feels natural to problem solve by making a story. It feels so satisfying to have a narrative in pictures and words that can explain challenges.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
After fifteen long years, I finally published my graphic novel, Two Tribes. I could not have done it without collaborating with talented, generous people. I failed a lot, and I was scared a lot. I’m so glad I faced my fears and kept going.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
My friend and I would start in Hollywood. Everyone wants to see the stars on Hollywood Blvd! Along the way we’d browse the books and posters at Hollywood Movie Posters. A brief stop at Urban Masala for samosas to fuel up to shop at Iguana Vintage. We would spend hours there finding a fabulous outfit to wear to the Catalina Jazz Club in the evening.
We wouldn’t miss the Autry Museum. I appreciate their exhibits that rethink the story of the American West. It also fills me with pride to see Native American artistry celebrated. Not to forget my Jewish heritage, I’d have to follow that up with a visit to my favorite kosher burger place, Jeff’s Gourmet on Pico Blvd.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I’m dedicating a shoutout to The Braid! They are a theatre company dedicated to telling diverse Jewish stories. They promote and mentor Jews of Color. Most importantly, they create experiences that are inspiring to audiences. They tenaciously produce quality storytelling.
