We had the good fortune of connecting with Mia Dawes and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Mia, what is the most important factor behind your success?
The most important factor behind my success, is discipline, consistency, and the practice of being intentional.
I began to incorporate these practices around the age of 19-20, when the pandemic hit. The pandemic was a wake up call for me and I believe for others, to pursue what they’re passionate about because we’re only given one chance to do so. I started to practice discipline through little habits that contributed to discipline in my professional life/career. I practiced consistency through daily workout routines and daily prayer/meditation. Even if there were days that I didn’t ‘feel like it’, I still did it. Consistency was what led me to build discipline. The practice of being intentional was done through daily prayer/meditation. This time I would take for myself in the morning was crucial for setting the tone of my day. I was very intentional with what I was meditating on or praying for, in order to have a successful day. Consistency, discipline. and setting intentions are all practices that can be done at the start of your day to achieve success in what you’re pursuing.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I’m super proud of how far I’ve come with my education as I’m about to get my 2nd degree in Business from NYU. I’m very excited to continue my career in Marketing and also use my DJ journey to inspire others to try hobbies and skills outside of their worklife. I believe it is hard after your mid-twenties to get into the habit of taking on new hobbies. For this reason, I think it’s important to get out of your comfort zone as soon as possible. This may mean traveling to a new country alone, or taking a class in something that helps you conquer a fear such as public speaking. Putting into practice the act of getting out of your comfort zone can help you build adaptibility to situations you don’t normally find yourself in. This can also help you beat anxieties you may have about the world around you. The biggest benefit of all I believe, is that it broadens your perspective and helps build empathy towards people of all cultural backgrounds.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
As an LA native, I would show my good friends the best Korean BBQ spot in KTown. I would also take them to SilverLake to visit my favorite thrift store and do a picnic at the Silverlake Meadow. For drinks I would go to Bar Lubitsch, they always have great cocktails and have a fun dancing area in the backroom. If my LA friends were to visit me in NYC where I currently reside, I highly recommend we’d go get breakfast and coffee at C&B, go to Prospect Park to hang out, and for drinks visit Lovers of Today.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would love to dedicate this shoutout to my family, especially my two parents. I’m extremely lucky and blessed to be able to have grown up with two parents that are still together and love eachother very much. More importnatly, my parents have always supported my pursuit of higher education and learning skills that would facilitate my character growth. Those skills include the arts such as dance, mindfulness, and learning a new language. Even though my family believed that higher education would get me far in life, they also support my pursuit of other skills that could strengthen my role as a leader in this world. I would love to give a shoutout to my mother who played a huge role in who I am today. She came from Ecuador and has been able to climb the ladder to become a successful businesswoman in this country. Her perseverance and ambitious spirit was something that also kept me motivated and continues to motivate me. Other people that deserve a little credit would be my dear friends who took the time to support and encourage me to pursue my music journey in DJing.
