Meet Ruby Valenica | Brand & Website Designer

We had the good fortune of connecting with Ruby Valenica and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Ruby, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
There wasn’t a formal thought process when I started my business; it really began as a creative outlet. After spending years working in accounting, I realized I wanted to tap into a different side of my brain, the creative side. It all started simple, I began by making invitations for kids’ parties for my family. From there, I discovered calligraphy, first by hand and then digitally on my iPad.
As I embraced this creativity, I also began listening to podcasts at work and hearing inspiring stories of women who were thriving in their creative businesses. It made me wonder if I could do something similar on the side while still working. So, I took a baby step and began selling things like printed t-shirts, doormats, and Christmas ornaments.
Then one day, I came across an ad on Facebook for a course teaching skills to build an online business. Something in me just clicked, and I took immediate action and signed up for the course. This opened a whole new door for me. I started honing my graphic design skills, and soon after, I asked myself: ‘How can I help other business owners?’
That was the turning point when I shifted from creating products to offering creative online services. I began by offering graphic design services, and soon after it evolved into branding and website design services. So, what began as a simple desire to be more creative had transformed into a journey of helping other entrepreneurs grow their businesses.

What should our readers know about your business?
I run a brand and website design studio, I offer custom brand strategy, brand identity design and website design for heart centered health and wellness brands. I began my business 4 years ago while pregnant with my 2nd child. While working in accounting, I felt like there was something more for me to do, I was no longer feeling fulfilled with the work I was doing. During the end of 2020, I made the decision to quit my job and went all in on my business, and started getting clients.
What I hear time and time again is that many of the clients that I work with come work with me due to my signature style which is airy, fresh, welcoming, and the translation of the energy in the work we do. But what truly sets me apart from others is my process where I dive deep into the heart of my clients brand, which in turn is translated into effective strategy with visuals, messaging, and content to attract dream clients. I also carry a deep understanding of the health and wellness space in which the woman I work with values such as mind, body, and soul. When they see that I understand their industry and who they tap into and my understanding of design it makes for a great working relationship.
Getting to my 4th year in business has not easy. It was me having to juggle multiple roles and figuring it out. Motherhood is hard and then adding a new business is like having another baby. It was a challenge because I had to figure out how to do it and I eventually came to realize that I get to create my own path and not follow what is deemed traditional and stepping into that was so helpful. I leaned on my support system for help. This was a challenge, just like most people, we want to do things on our own, but what I realized is that it takes a tribe and I had to learn how to be ok with asking and receiving support to alleviate the invisible burden that was carried on my shoulders. I learned that you don’t have to do it all on your own. And so I adopted the belief of “I get to do this with the support of others” This also made entrepreneurship less lonely and less harder.
I want the world to know that it’s ok to ask for help and if you don’t have it within your family, look for a community that will support and uplift you on this road of entrepreneurship. When you lean on support and community you begin to expand and grow within your business because that invisible burden gets lifted which allows you to move much quicker. Even though the burden is invisible you feel the relief when you choose to lean on the support to help you as you grow. We don’t have to do it alone.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I love all things Disney. So if my best friend was in town, I would hit up all my primas and we would head to Downtown Disney. We would start by grabbing a drink at Ballast Point Brewing, then head over to Disneyland and enjoy The Oogie Boogie Bash Halloween Party. We would have an amazing fun time!

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I would love to shout out my partner, Eric. Without his words of encouragement and love, I wouldn’t be doing the work I love and helping other entrepreneurs. Entrepreneurship isn’t an easy path to take, but when you have a support system that encourages you to push through the hard lessons and never give up, it makes the journey so much easier.
I also want to shout out the amazing community I’ve built with other incredible Latina entrepreneurs. Having a community that understands firsthand the mindset and business struggles that arise as you build your business, and hearing their words of encouragement has been invaluable. Just knowing I’m not alone, and that together we rise, has been so important in my entrepreneurial journey.
