We had the good fortune of connecting with Rick Son and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Rick, what led you to pursuing a creative path professionally?
My musical journey began subtly, emerging naturally without anyone forcing it on me. It was one of the first things I truly devoted myself to, pouring effort and love into it. Once I recognized this passion, I knew I wanted to pursue music as a path. I aspired to be a composer above all else, captivated by the beauty of expressing my emotions and ideas through this graciously exquisite art form.

Looking back, I see how reckless I was at first. My piano skills were limited, and my artistic range was narrow. I realized that I needed to delve into some technical aspects if I wanted my music to resonate. As I worked on my musicality, I discovered deeper realms of music, eventually leading me to jazz and improvisation. I was initially drawn in by the intricate harmonies and rhythms, but it was the active creativity and collaborative chemistry that truly made me fall in love with it.

I find a strong connection between improvisation and composition, and that exploration has shaped who I am today. Now I write and perform music that is close to my heart. Drawing inspiration from my life, and what is happening in the world and around me.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Despite my profound love for music, I hesitated for a long time due to doubts about my abilities as a musician. I initially enrolled at the University of British Columbia to pursue a different field. Yet, I consistently found myself drawn back to music—participating in jam sessions, performing gigs, and writing songs. It took me some time to fully acknowledge my desire to pursue music, as it was the source of my true inspiration.

Eventually, I made an impulsive decision to travel to Korea to study at a music academy. I did this to push myself in a new direction before getting caught up in self-doubt; at that time, seeking a new environment felt like the right choice. Despite facing challenging living conditions and financial constraints, I experienced happiness I had never known. Unfortunately, just three months into my studies, the onset of COVID-19 necessitated my return to Canada, as I did not hold Korean citizenship. While I felt devastated upon my return, I also recognized the joy that came from pursuing my passion. I learned the beauty of being around diligent people who shared similar goals. Determined to enhance my craft, I began establishing myself as a performer by reaching out to music venues, organizing shows, and connecting with fellow musicians. It was during this time that I met one of the musicians I respect the most, who also became a caring friend.

The exploration of jazz and its related styles prompted many questions about my musical direction. One of the key lessons I learned was the importance of discipline and humility in my artistry. For me, music became increasingly about the connections I forge with those I perform alongside and the audiences I serve. It took time to realize that the development of my musicianship and my values as a person are deeply intertwined. I strive to convey these messages through the music I create.

I am currently collaborating with some of my closest friends and favorite musicians to release an album of my original compositions. This project will feature a selection of songs accompanied by piano, upright bass, and drums, drawing on orchestration reminiscent of a jazz rhythm section. It will be a sonic collaboration of my understanding of the Black American tradition and my own sound. I would describe this project as blending elements of contemporary jazz, pop, and ECM. This album is inspired by my life experiences and my reflections on the nature of existence. While I recognize that I have much to learn and ample room for growth, my goal is to share my perspective as a source of comfort, warmth, and reassurance for listeners.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I am currently in Boston, but let me take this one back home to Vancouver.

It’s a beautiful city with lots of green, I would say parks or hikes in town are all amazing. I hold great memories of looking down to the city at Burnaby Mountain.

Gastown is a great place to be, aesthetics at night are amazing and there are music venues that host talented groups such as 2nd Floor Gastown, Guilt & Co., etc.

Speaking of venues, a shout-out to Tyrant Studios located in downtown. The perfect venue for people looking for live jazz that will never disappoint.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
All the friends and colleagues I have shared music, laughter, and valuable conversations with. They are all a part of who I am as an artist. If one saw that I am at least a decent person, the credits go to all of the wonderful people around me.

As for my family, we have navigated numerous challenges together, and I am profoundly grateful for the immense love and support they provide—support that I feel I do not fully deserve.
