Meet Aja K. | DJ/Producer

We had the good fortune of connecting with Aja K. and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Aja, we’d love for you to start things off by telling us something about your industry that we and others not in the industry might be unaware of?
One thing or five lol. Going into starting my business I was unaware of the additional costs that one will incur if you are dotting all your “Is” and crossing all your “Ts”. Dj insurance, health insurance, retirement accounts, taxes are all ON ME. Understanding that your salary will have to budget and make room for those expenses is KEY.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I can not fully say what sets me apart from everyone else in this business besides my WHY. I embarked on this journey because I LOVE MUSIC. That is it. Everything I do for my business starts from there. Easy should not even be in the ballpark, becoming a DJ and making a sustainable career out of it was the most difficult thing I have ever done. I am still overcoming challenges, the pandemic was CHALLENGING and now with the state of the economy it has become even more challenging. I have learned so much that this little box could not even begin to be enough space to detail everything but I will say that “do it even when you don’t feel like it” has been instrumental. My brand/story is probably similar to anyone else’s, just know I am passionate about my career and I am not afraid of hard work.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I am not the tour guide type of girl lol! I have lived in LA for so long and there is still somethings that I did not even know existed to do and try in the city. It just depends on your vibe and what you like to do, there is something for everybody. I am more of a concert live music girlie so I love a good free summer concert at the museum or an evening out at The Hollywood Bowl.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
There are several people that encouraged and supported me along the way but my cousin who is more like a sister is the one who blindly supports ANY effort, idea or random plan to take over the world. She is literally a soft place to land. She is a longtime business owner herself so she gets it. Many times I am the one people call when they need an ear so it is nice to have someone who KNOWS me that can shoot it straight even when I may not want to hear “it is not a good idea to invest my entire savings into throwing a bubble party in the middle of Tucson”.
