We had the good fortune of connecting with Hot Stepmom and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Hot Stepmom, how do you think about risk?
Devoting so much of our passion, creativity, and resources towards such an uncertain career path is a huge risk on its own. Pursuing music can sometimes feel so reliant on luck and chance that we’ve just had to learn to accept the risk and keep doing what we love.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Individually, each member of the band has an incredibly diverse set of musical preferences and backgrounds, we all love to explore and inject many different genres into our music. As of right now, we are most excited about our upcoming projects, including our upcoming single “Cocoon” (releasing October 11) and an unnamed album that is already underway.
We have always prioritized playing shows and creating new music more than just about anything else, which has given us a steady stream of work and growth. The creative aspect of music has always been less of a challenge than the promotion and business side of the band. It’s easy to get wrapped up in that creative aspect, but the stress of maintaining a presence in the local music scene and online has often been difficult to overcome. We’ve been learning how to manage our time appropriately and plan ahead so we can juggle the two more effectively. We’ve also had to learn not to compare ourselves to others in the realm of social media.
We like to emphasize the importance of team building and becoming friends with bandmates. We genuinely believe that we have staying power because we have strong bonds.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
We’d go to downtown Olympia! I’d take them to Dumpster Values, Wicked Pie, Rainy Day Records, the flea market, Captain Little, Super Silver, and the Wiggle Room (and more). If they’re vegan we could go to Le Voyeur or Owl’s Nest cafe. Maybe catch the Earth Day parade if the time is right.
Then we could catch a local show at Real Art Tacoma, which is one of two easily accessible all ages venues in the area. It’s locally owned and has a cafe inside called Beyond Thunderdome, a small thrift store, and bar access if you’re over 21.
McMenamin’s Spanish Ballroom is the other all ages venue in the area. I love ordering a 7up mixed with various fruit juices.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Our friends and family for supporting us all throughout, Regan Barger for his early mentorship and support, Sophia Barger for her previous work in the band and unconditional support.
