We had the good fortune of connecting with Dj Skip and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi DJ, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
After stepping away from DJing in 2017 due to mental health challenges, I transitioned from performing at massive events with over 400 attendees to working in the solitude of my studio as a music producer. I launched my own website, offering artists a space to purchase my beats. Since then, I’ve sold over 100 beats and forged meaningful relationships with artists, which have evolved into collaborative projects, resulting in albums and EPs.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I began DJing at the age of 9, and as my skills improved, I eventually landed my own radio show. Unfortunately, my career was cut short by panic attacks, leading me to transition into music production. Although I still face health challenges, creating music on my own terms helps me manage them. I have a passion for producing hip hop, especially when I get the chance to incorporate jazz and lo-fi samples. It hasn’t been an easy journey, but if I can inspire others going through similar struggles, then it’s all worth it.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I was born in Oxnard, CA, but grew up in Lancaster. I have a deep love for my city and proudly shout it out whenever I can. If someone were visiting, I’d take them to The BLVD. It’s a lively spot where you’ll often see lowriders cruising by and people enjoying the local bars and restaurants. There’s also a record store called Voodoo Vinyl, and you might recognize some of their records I’ve sampled in my music.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I dedicate this to my family. They’ve always been in my corner and supported me from day one. I wouldn’t be who I am and where I’m at if it wasn’t for them.
