We had the good fortune of connecting with Hank (chia-hung) Lin and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Hank (Chia-Hung), what role has risk played in your life or career?
Decisions are being made every day, and every decision has its own risk. As a musician, we might encounter opportunities quite often, and then there will be decisions that must be made. It can be hard sometimes to make decisions. Life is all about making choices. Every decision you make opens a new door, but at the same time, you close another door as well. It all depends on what you want, what you see as potential in those doors, and sometimes, what your gut tells you to do. These doors play such a big role in our lives and careers, they can change our lives, both in good ways and bad ways. Just make sure you think of all the pros and cons before you make the decision, and don’t look back after you make the decision, live with the path you chose and the risk you picked, and dedicate yourself fully to the world behind that new door. I’m sure good things will come to you!

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
Hey, I’m Hank, I’m a drummer/multi-instrumentalist from Taiwan, based in LA. Currently, I’m playing with Dead Marble, NetherOak, and Joshua Gomez.
I started playing piano when I was 5, and that’s when my passion for music began to grow. Later, when I was around 16 years old, I started to play drums, and a year later, I also picked up guitar. Drums immediately became my favorite. I love sitting behind the kit and expressing myself. It was also around that time that I started listening to rock and metal music, it really influenced me as a drummer and shaped my playing style. During my last year of high school, I decided to choose music as my career and decided to study abroad. Therefore, I started my study at the Musicians Institute. I’m mainly a metal drummer, my playing style incorporates a lot of double-kick drumming. I practice a lot, always trying to be better every day, but because of this, I learned a lesson the hard way: Do not underestimate how powerful and important rest is! By over-practicing, I injured myself. As a musician, that’s one of the last things you want it to happen. After the injury, I started to value my resting time more, and I found out that with a good amount of rest, I made more progress than before. So, to all the musicians out there, while you’re pushing your limits, don’t forget to take a break, let your body relax and refresh!

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Malibu Beach is one of my favorite spots around here in LA. I like to go there at night, just to feel the wind and listen to the ocean, it gave a really relax and chill vibe, it helps me clear my mind after a whole day of practice. It’s also fun to go there with friends, play beach volleyball, hangout, or even start the campfire sometimes. It’s a place for good memories!

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
First of all, nothing is possible for me without my family’s support. When I first brought up the idea that I wanted to choose music as my career, I got full support from my family, especially my parents. I’m so lucky, and I’m super grateful. After I came here, I met so many amazing people and made so many great friends. They helped me get used to the culture and the environment here, and they are a big part of my daily life, I can’t thank them enough. Also, my bands Dead Marble, NetherOak, and Joshua Gomez, thank you all for trusting me. It’s all about learning and growing, being in a band is not as easy as it seems, and a lot of the time, you learn it by being in one. I’m lucky enough to be in multiple bands, and I can’t wait for what’s lying ahead of us!
