We had the good fortune of connecting with Sade Sanchez and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi sade, what led you to pursuing a creative path professionally?
SADE: I fell in love with music at a very young age. I don’t remember a time in my where I wasn’t involved in some form of music, wether It was playing cello in orchestra, choir, making mix tapes, burning cds, teenage jam sessions in my bedroom and eventually my first punk band followed by meeting Ellie in high school, starting a band with her and even winning battle of the bands in high school. Its just made sense for me to continue on that path. I didn’t really want to do anything else. I was just lucky to know from an early age. Obviously there’s been times in my life where I was working other jobs but Its always been to support what I really wanted to do which was make music. But I’ve always known what my passion was.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
With every album we’ve put out, I feel an evolution. I feel closer to myself. I feel like I’m getting better at communicating through the language of music and that makes me feel confident. I guess, I’d say it’s been really a life long journey. Teaching myself guitar when I was about 15 was no simple task. But with passion and willingness and a bit of discipline, I was able to do it. Mostly it’s about dedication. We used to do almost everything ourselves when we first started the band. Booking our own shows, making our own merch, even burning cds to sell when we finally had our first tour. Investing all our money into the band. Lots of diy stuff. It was a lot of tedious work sometimes but you really learn a lot about yourself and your band. We’ve traveled under some pretty brutal conditions but over time all of that has turned into something really beautiful. Like being on a label we love or working with other artists when designing merch, making friends on the road, having a cool agency or management that feels like family. We continue to grow in every way possible the more we do it.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I would take them on a hike up the observatory to show them the view of Los Angeles and show them the geography of L.A. Then I’d take them to get a coffee and pastry at Trails. Id take them to vintage shopping or thrifting. I would also go to the dog beach another day. Probably Hollywood Forever Cemetery. I like going to the theatre so I’d probably take them to The Alamo. If there were any bands I like or curious about id try to go see a show. For food id go to Lil Doms, Kitchen Mouse, Sonora Town, Musso and Frank or Hama. Joshua tree is not far so that’s definitely something I’d like to do.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Obviously all my guitar heroes. My music inspirations. But also, my parents who have always been supportive. And my Dad, because it was because of him that I had access to a guitar. If he didn’t have one laying around the house who knows if I would’ve ever picked one up. All of our friends who supported us in the early days. All our fans who show their love and support.
