We had the good fortune of connecting with Nikolina Terhune and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Nikolina, how has your background shaped the person you are today?
I am from Serbia – a small country in Eastern Europe. I lost my mom when I was 5, so my main role models were my grandma and my dad.
Growing up in a European household taught me a lot of valuable lessons and definitely shaped me into the person I am today. My grandma, who is the pillar of our family, always kept us together with her unconditional love and delicious, traditional meals. She taught me to be kind and strong and my dad, who is a business owner, instilled in me ambition and entrepreneurial spirit. Growing up in a European family also taught me to be a perfectionist, to always set high standards for myself, and to keep pushing forward.
I came to the US eight years ago because of my dream to visit NYC, but never in a million years did I think that I would build a life here.
Coming here gave me a fresh perspective, and helped me learn more about myself. I learned that I was much stronger than I thought, and to take one step at a time.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Back home, I studied Spanish because of my love for languages. It was such a beautiful period of my life, but as time passed, I learned more about myself. I’ve always wanted to create something. I was always someone that loved Social Media, taking photos and videos of every coffee shop, travel, night out etc. Creating content was something that came natural to me, I just enjoyed doing it.
My journey as a content creator started during the pandemic. I started experimenting with my camera by taking photos of things I baked, but it took me years to get where I am today, and it definitely wasn’t easy.
Many times I wanted to quit and felt defeated, but I learned instead to take a step back and regroup.
Moving to LA and building connections was not easy, but it challenged me to give my best and keep pushing forward.
Thanks to Instagram, I made some great connections with like minded creators, and slowly started taking projects for a local, female-owned agency.
While I am still not where I want to be, I’m proud of all the progress I made.
I learned some very valuable lessons along the way. I learned that there is no success without failure, and that embracing the journey is what it’s all about.
I think what sets me apart from others is my unique point-of-view. Whenever I’m creating, my goal is to tell a story that will make people’s lives more beautiful, I want to make people feel at ease.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I would take her to Point Dume for breathtaking views, Runyon Canyon for a hike – you have to do it if you’re visiting LA for the first time- and the Getty museum. I would also take her to Larchmont Village, because it’s one of my favorite neighborhoods in LA. Ktown for some fun and amazing Korean BBQ, Felix or Funke for the best authentic Italian food in LA, Reel Inn in Malibu, Venice and of course In N Out burger – it’s an LA staple.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I want to dedicate this shoutout to my husband. He is someone who always gave me love and support and thought me to go through my emotions when I need to, but always keep a positive mindset.
I also want to shoutout all the inspiring, powerful women that follow their dreams and never settle for less than they deserve.
