We had the good fortune of connecting with Yingxiao Ouyang and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Yingxiao, every day, we about how much execution matters, but we think ideas matter as well. How did you come up with the idea for your business?
I am currently the lead product designer at my studio OYYX Design. Design has tremendous power in creating a sense of belonging and exciting people. I want to share this power with the world, and help people become who they really are.

I started my design journey back in 2011 as an industrial design student. After 6 years of dedicated work with world famous client in retail and finance, i find my passion in designing data products to make information beautiful. This is the main reason i came up with the idea of my own design studio. Through the year, my studio projects like Smart Wristband for the diabetics and Girls Find Girls App have won prestigious design awards like 2024 New York Product Design, Gold Award, 2024 London Product Design, Silver Award and 2024 Muse Design Award.

I work with business to differentiate their product offerings by enhancing user experience. I specialize in making complex problems easy to understand and easy to take actions. In this digital-first world, this is crucial for world-wide businesses as it saves tremendous time on unnecessary blockers and help people focus on what is really important for them.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I create innovative design solutions for complex data products. My design sets apart from others from its simplicity and creativity. In my past 6 years, I have been leading over 15 product design and development, enabling new opportunities for world-famous businesses and accelerate critical and advanced technology deployment.

The hardest part of the journey is the balance of the pros and cons. Sometimes, creating a new solution can mean resulting in a new problem. It requires a designer to really think in the business’ mindset and also in users’ mindset. Communicate, and even over-communicate in a honest, humble and patient way is one of the most important lessons i learned in the past 6 years.

I value the fact that design will never end. Sending out the design delivery is not the stop sign. To me, launching a project is more like a sending out a signal to the world, a signal that can identify people with the same goals. Hearing their echos and feedback towards our projects is equally important, even the harsh ones. In this process of building products and collecting feedback, my design studio is dedicated to create experiences that create a sense of belonging and excitement.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Santa Monica Pier is one of the spots definitely worth a visit. This is a place where you can relax and have a cup of beer with loved ones. The sunset is so beautiful that it is a blessing for everyone who get a chance to enjoy it. I love going to Santa Monica Pier whenever i am around.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I want to shoutout to my design mentor Jieyu (Panda) Xiong, Kelsie Sclafani and Jihoon Kang at Mastercard for their dedicated leadership at my current industry position. Jieyu has been mentoring me by her exceptional hands-on design experience, which lifts my design skills to a higher level. Kelsie is a design leader who always patiently listens to my struggles and encourages me to share my design expertise, which greatly boost my confidence. Jihoon has always been super supportive with my design growth and mentorship skills by encouraging me to create more work and openly share with others. Their leadership helped me overcome many challenges and launch industry-leading product design solutions.

Meeting them and working with them is a great honor. They hold high standard to product design, visual design and product usability, which set a high bar on our team. They have helped me reflect on my design project, move towards more appealing product design and support my design decisions with great care. I wouldn’t achieve what i achieved today without their expertise, support and leadership. I want to shoutout and say thank you to Jieyu, Kelsie and Jihoon!
