Meet Kate Chip | NA

We had the good fortune of connecting with Kate Chip and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Kate, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
One of my favourite things to do is to create opportunities for people to meet and connect, but you can’t just tell folks to show up and hang out—you have to give them a reason. I wondered what could be fun, essentially free, and accessible to everyone. Books felt like the perfect answer—a natural conversation starter and a great way to bring people together.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
Honestly the only thing that motivates me in life is connecting with others. Everything else comes second to that.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Food:
KG Bakery in Echo Park for the Banh Mi sandwiches and cookies.
Mariscos Las Brisas in Boyle Heights for the best Mexican seafood dishes. I especially love the grilled shrimp tacos.
Night Market Song in Silver Lake for the fried chicken.
Pink Orchid in Glendale for the chicken cutlet sandwich. I know it sounds random you just have to trust me.
Natas Pastries for the Portuguese tart.
Borneo Eatery in Alhambra for Beef Rendang and Nasi Lemak
101 Noodle Express in Alhambra for the beef rolls.
Zaatar Factory And Bakery in Burbank. I love the wraps and the people that work there.
Coffee at Woodcat in Echo Park
Things to do:
Ciclavia!
Night stroll in and around Los Feliz.
A few laps around Echo Park Lake for a coffee and a chat.
Thrifting at the spots in Echo Park.
Sherman Oaks for a stroll up Ventura Boulevard for a snack and some ice cream.
A class at my gym – Pharos – in Echo Park.
Bike ride up the LA river from La Colombe to Burbank, and once you’re there take a horseback ride through Griffith Park. There are stables right off the path.
Hike in Elysian Park – especially in the spring.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Yes, my two friends Maria Teresa Kamel and Jamie Rowland. Without them I would not have been able to get this thing started. They are EXCELLENT friends and I’m so grateful for them both.
