We had the good fortune of connecting with Kim O’Hara and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Kim, what role has risk played in your life or career?
Risk is an interesting concept because impatience can take on the same components. They key difference is when you take a good risk, you are still scared but you have an inner peace that the choice you are making in the long run is perfect for your unique life experience. Why do some people take the leap to write a book and others only talk about it? I can tell you that they may not be ready and that is okay. I know that people have been telling me to create a podcast for years; since I started book coaching and speaking out about having a voice. I just wasn’t ready. When I finally launched the concept of You Should Write A Book About That in 2020, the risk was no longer perilous, but rather exciting. All the right pieces came into place to the point where I was like, wow, that was easy! If I had tried at any other time, the push would have been hard. I am happy to risk losing something if I don’t believe in my heart it is the right time. In my past life, when I was a movie producer, I did a lot of forcing the envelope out of hunger or sometimes even desperation. I would not end up in healthy situations. That whole career in itself was a risk because everything was always so tenuous. Now as a book coach, I have a solid anchor from learning risk aversion from others, taking baby steps with risk and also trusting everything happens in due course.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
I recently took on the title Book Coach to Best Sellers® and began working with private clients for a full year. I came to the understanding all my clients who were aiming to actually became best sellers, and that we collaborated on the processes they went through, not just the book writing but also where to distribute, publish and market. The relationships I have with my clients are personal, deep and meaningful. I don’t take on a lot of clients a year because of the white glove experience but I am actively building a subscription service with two other book professionals to help people write books AND know how to publish and market on a budget. That allows me to serve my private clientele as well as be of service to thousands of other hopeful authors through my teachings. If you had asked me five years ago when I was transitioning from a divorce, and leaving a career in the movies after twenty years, if I would be a book coach, I would have had no clue how to start. I was working as a substitute teacher contemplating going to school to be a math teacher. Luckily I discovered one miserable summer studying in the library I still truly suck at math. I closed the book, left teaching and went to a women’s business conference. Someone I met randomly told me to go and at that point, I was following my inner compass. I found other women in business and coaching who showed me the ropes and A Story Inside was born. I went through the experience of writing my own book and getting a publisher as well so I could see the process. I have always been a deeply intuitive empathic person. Even when I was an art house movie producer, I had a platform for issues whether it was addiction, abuse or personal struggle As a book coach, I look for books to serve that help others with their personal struggles through the experiences of the author. The author looks to me to help them gage what to tell the world. I have that skilled balance as well as that intuitive connection. What I couldn’t do with movies was distribute them easily which was heart breaking. Now, I know the publishing world well enough to help an author whose book I have birthed with them get their voice heard.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Oh this is so hard with Covid! I would take them for sure to Bruce’s Beach at sunset in Manhattan Beach with a picnic. I would have them get a juice at Rainbow Foods in Venice. I would take them for a hike in one of the canyons. Definitely to the 69th floor of the Intercontinental hotel for drinks downtown. Best view ever. Dodgers stadium for a game with seats behind home plate and a Dodger dog. A movie at the Arclight in downtown Culver city or the Landmark at the old Pavilion on Pico Blvd. Some of the best places in LA are not obvious and they change depending on the times you go. Rueben Ingold Park in LA has some of the most magical vistas and nearby is a road that offers the most picturesque view of downtown.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I spent time in the early part of this year working with a manifestation coach Heidi Baker. While at first I felt silly bringing someone in to help me think boldly about my life, she was this incredible steady force for me when I was trying to call into my life some bold moves and up levels. After working with her I bought a house and created a podcast, as well as branded myself as a Book Coach to Best Sellers®. She helped me call in what was waiting to be in my life… I just needed to believe it.
