We had the good fortune of connecting with Denise Gutierrez and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Denise, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
When I started my business, I was still in culinary school. Honestly, I was terrified. I didn’t feel ready- my culinary training had just begun, and I had no background in business. The risk seemed overwhelming. But as a passionate culinarian, I was always eating out, exploring new places. Sometimes, I’d come across restaurants with poor service or foods that didn’t meet expectations, and I’d wonder, how are these places still in business?

Around 2018-2019, I started questioning myself: Why am I not in business? Despite my lack of formal training or business experience, I knew one thing for certain- people loved my food. I was constantly receiving praise and encouragement for my cooking. So, I decided to take the leap. I didn’t feel completely ready, but I knew I had something special to offer, and that belief gave me the courage to move forward.

What should our readers know about your business?
I am a private chef based in the Los Angeles area. I specialize in cooking for families in the comfort of their homes, preparing customized weekly meal plans, catering events of all sizes, and occasionally hosting pop-ups.

What sets me apart is my passion and ambition. Gastronomy isn’t just my career- it’s my life. Every aspect of who I am revolves around food. I love working one on one with clients and expanding their culinary horizons. Its a privilege to get to know my clients and create nutritious meals tailored to their specific preferences. Over time, I develop such a deep understanding of their tastes that I no longer need to ask what they’ll enjoy- it becomes second nature. That connection and personalization make my work deeply fulfilling.

My unique cooking techniques and style also distinguish me from others in the industry. I’v build lasting relationships with many of my clients, some of whom have been with me since I started my business. Just last week, a client called to ask about a soup I made for them seven year ago. Moments like this remind me of the lasting impact my cooking has on people.

I got to where I am today by relentlessly marketing myself to anyone who would listen. In the beginning, I had an overwhelming sense of urgency- I would talk to everyone about what I do and post daily on instagram. That dedication helped me build my initial clientele base. As time went on, word of mouth began to spread, and everything took off from there.

The early days weren’t without challenges. Being a chef was my sole source of income, and the pressure was intense. It often effected my mental health, but I was determined to pursue my dream. Through the years of consistent marketing, and obsessive work ethic, I established my name in the industry. Eventually my reputation preceded me- clients and chef friends began recommending me to high profile individuals, which became a turning point in my career.

I’ve learned that networking and social media are invaluable in today’s business world. In my line of work, it’s not just about what you know, but who you know. Attending culinary school gave me the confidence to refine my craft, but it was networking the truly opened doors for me. Building connections, both online and offline, has been instrumental in growing my business and achieving success.

As a first-generation immigrant in the United States, I always dreamed of becoming a highly recognized chef. Pursuing my passion didn’t always feel possible, but now that I get to do what I love every day, I am profoundly grateful. My business is the result of hard work, dedication, and a deep love for my craft.

I strive to provide my clients with unforgettable experiences, offering not only timeless classic dishes but also innovative creations inspired by my Latin roots—a fresh twist on familiar flavors.

When you book with me, you can expect personalized service, thoughtfully tailored to your unique tastes and preferences.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
It would be a true culinary and adventure-filled day!

We’d kick things off with a scenic hike in the Hollywood Hills, soaking in stunning views of the city. From there, we’d head to The Butcher’s Daughter for a delicious breakfast or brunch to fuel up for the day.

Next, we’d venture downtown to explore unique spots like The Last Bookstore, a literary treasure trove, and Angels Flight, the historic funicular railway. After some sightseeing and wandering through the city’s vibrant streets, we’d treat ourselves to an incredible sushi experience at Sushi Gen.

Afterward, we’d head home for a moment to rest and reset, enjoying my signature matcha for a boost of energy. Once refreshed, we’d make our way to the Griffith Observatory. There, we’d explore the museum, take in breathtaking views of the city, and use the telescopes for some magical stargazing to end the day on a high note. For dinner, we would drive back and enjoy a local gem, Verse.

In the days to come these would be my top choices for fast food, casual and fine dining:

In-n-Out
Joe and the Juice
providence
Nobu
Eggslut
Diddy Riese
Shake Shack
Capital Sea food Beverly Hills

Sites to see:

LACMA
Museum of Tolerance
The Broad
Hike to Eaton Canyon
Universal Studios
Disney

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I owe so much to my mom. She has always been the one to encourage me to follow my dreams and pursue what I love. when I decided to quit my full-time job and dedicate my time to my studies, she supported me wholeheartedly. Not only did she and my dad provide financial support, but she also stood by me in every way possible. I truly believe I wouldn’t be where I am without her. Throughout every single stage of my life, she has been my rock, my support system, and my best friend, while our relationship hasn’t been without challenges, I know I can always count on her.

I also want to acknowledge my friend Lorenzo Cerda, who was the driving force behind my decision to start my business. We met in culinary school, and he constantly pushed me beyond my personal bounders. Although we aren’t as close now, it was his encouragement and belief in me that gave me the confidence to move forward with my business
