We had the good fortune of connecting with Jake Scott and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Jake, can you share the most important lesson you’ve learned over the course of your career?
One of the most important lessons I have learned as a graphic designer—especially during my time with the Los Angeles Lakers—is the power of consistency in branding. The Lakers are a global icon, and much of that comes from their unwavering commitment to their brand identity—visually, culturally, and emotionally. Anything representing the Lakers in the public eye must align with the organization’s values and legacy built over decades. Working in that environment has shown me how crucial it is to stay true to the brand while still finding ways to innovate. While consistency is always the priority, I also try to bring my unique perspective as a designer to every project. This balance has deeply influenced how I approach design, ensuring everything I create is cohesive, intentional, and resonates with the audience.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I’m a graphic designer based in Los Angeles, working across print, branding, social media, multimedia, and UX design. I like to challenge the traditional rules of design, using bold typography, strong contrasts, and big shifts in scale to make my work stand out. I’m always up for learning something new—whether it’s software, techniques, or exploring both digital and analog styles—which helps me bring fresh ideas and energy into every project. One of the projects I am most proud of was my senior thesis, Redacted. It was an immersive installation designed as an artist’s office, exploring themes of secrecy and transparency. The piece includes posters, framed photos, vinyl typography, and an interactive psychological experience where viewers are invited to shred their hidden emotions. Redacted challenged me to push boundaries in both design and storytelling, and it represented my style and growth as a designer while addressing thought-provoking themes.

Getting to where I am now has been a mix of dedication, learning, and navigating challenges. I’ve worked on a lot of different projects, each with its own obstacles, but those experiences have shaped me as a designer. I’ve also been lucky to have incredible mentors, friends, and family who’ve inspired me along the way. If there’s one thing I’ve learned, it’s the importance of being adaptable. Design is always evolving, and being open to learning and experimenting has kept my work fresh and impactful. At the core of my design philosophy is a commitment to creating something distinctive. I strive to create work that meets aesthetic standards but also resonates deeply with the audience, ensuring that each project tells a compelling story. My journey is one of continuous exploration, always seeking to push the boundaries of creativity while staying true to the essence of the brands I work with.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
There are so many great spots to go to in LA, which is why I will always love this city. If it’s a nice sunny day (which it normally is) I’d love to take my friend to Manhattan Beach or one of the many flea markets—my favorite being Silverlake Flea. For lunch, we would have to go to Homestate, which has locations all over the city—I probably eat there at least 3 or 4 times a month. A delicious dinner on the rooftop of Cha Cha Chá in the Arts District would follow, and then of course—given my current position—I would take my friend downtown to experience seeing the Los Angeles Lakers play one of their many home games.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
A big shoutout goes to Mika Ventura, my direct boss at the Lakers, as well as my professor a few years ago at college. Mika has played a huge role in helping me hone my skills and develop my design style. Mika was the one who informed me about the opportunity with the Lakers, inspiring me to apply for the position. Her mentorship and guidance have shaped who I am as a designer today. I also wouldn’t be where I am without the support of my parents. They’ve been there every step of the way, financing my education and housing, and always encouraging me to follow my passion for design. I have to also give credit to several friends I met while in LMU’s graphic design program. They constantly inspire me and encourage me to grow as a designer. We’re all figuring out our unique paths, and having that creative support system is so important to me.
