Meet Hairong Wang | Writer/Director/Filmmaker

We had the good fortune of connecting with Hairong Wang and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Hairong, what habits do you feel helped you succeed?
I am more of a listener than a speaker. I like to think through all the possibilities before making decisions. The downside of this approach is that I sometimes miss opportunities because I react too late. However, it also makes my projects more complete and well-rounded. It allows me to be fully prepared—I can always answer questions from my crew or actors because I’ve already thought about those scenarios. As a result, I always make plans before starting something. I enjoy the sense of certainty and preparedness that planning brings.”

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I enjoy making narrative films and comedies. Compared to genres like adventure, horror, or thrillers, these two genres can easily become ordinary if you don’t give them your best effort. However, I believe they also hold the greatest potential.
I focus on the subtle aspects of life, capturing simple behaviors and events from everyday moments. My goal is to tell universal stories that most people can relate to. I like to highlight the things that happen to us all the time but often go unnoticed.
I also value traditional storytelling craft and take pride in paying attention to it. I truly appreciate those who still take the time to enjoy traditional storytelling, especially when there are so many other types of entertainment available today.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I am currently in Los Angeles. So if it’s your first time in SoCal, I would say you definitely need to check out the beaches, like Manhattan Beach and Hermosa Beach. Not only to see the sea and sunset but also to enjoy the community. It’s always pleasant for me to just sit there or take a walk, to not think about work or pressures.
After sunset, I’d suggest you find a restaurant in Torrance. They have great Japanese food. My fav one is called ‘Tendon Tempura Carlos Jr.’

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I would like to give a special shoutout to my family, especially my grandpa. My family is from the countryside in Weifang, Shandong Province, China. When I was born, they all worked in a cement factory in my hometown. It wasn’t a high-paying job, but it was considered stable at the time.
When my grandfather was around 55 years old, he decided to start his own business and moved to Suzhou, China – a way bigger city compared with where he came from. According to him, he left with nothing but a briefcase, saying that even if he failed, he would just return with that same briefcase. He made incredible progress, and later, my dad joined him in the business.
When I was two and a half years old, my family moved to Suzhou as well. I’ve never told my grandpa this, but whenever I face challenges, I think about his story. If he could succeed against the odds, I believe I can too.
