Meet Cyrus Talaiefar | Guitarist, Bassist, and DJ

We had the good fortune of connecting with Cyrus Talaiefar and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Cyrus, what led you to pursuing a creative path professionally?
Music has always been the answer for me. I have been surrounded by music since I was a kid thanks to my mom and dad who would play their favorite artists like The Beatles and Pink Floyd. We had a boombox that could play cassettes and CD’s growing up, so I would always play something whenever I could. I learned to play the alto saxophone in the second grade, and my appreciation of music grew even more after learning different jazz pieces. I picked up the guitar after Guitar Hero came out and never put it down. Being in multiple bands as a guitarist and bass player has been wildly influential to my overall taste as well. On top of that, being in the electronic music scene and DJing house music has been incredible as well. Music has helped me through so many different times in my life and lead me to where I am now, and I love contributing anything to the musical canvas of the world.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
When it comes to the art I create, what I feel comes to mind is authenticity. It’s about as real as it can get to my emotional state of being at the time, my ability to craft songs or generate ideas, and my overall sense of identity. Sometimes I write things that may not make sense to a lot of people, but make perfect sense to me. In my experience, I have always put out those things regardless of the outcome. I have written songs in multiple genres from rock to punk to pop to house to something in between. I am always trying to expand my soundscapes and experiment a bit with creating atmospheres that may make sense later to listeners. The process to get to where I am was not easy as I have had to push my sounds myself, and sometimes it may seem like shouting into a void. Regardless, pushing forward is always the strategy and getting yourself out there as much as you can, even if it exposes your vulnerabilities as a human being. As long as you are genuine with your intentions, people will see that and latch on to your message.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
With me and my friends being around LA, there are a ton of things that we can do with a week. I would say that a trip to Santa Monica and Venice is always a fun time, soaking in the rays and getting a nice beach day. There are always concerts and shows playing somewhere, so depending on what my friends are feeling we could catch something that peaks their interest. Whether it’s a smaller show at Sound or Exchange or a big show at the Palladium or Greek, there’s always someone performing that we can see. There are some great spots to eat but it depends on what they’re into. I have really enjoyed eating at some vegan restaurants like Pura Vita in West Hollywood or at El Cocinero’s in Van Nuys. I’m not much of a drinker, but there are a ton of bars that are worth checking out in LA like Scum and Villainy or Death and Co. We can go hiking around Griffith Observatory or at any one of the infinite amount of locations to go hiking. There’s so many things to do, it’s hard to narrow it down.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would like to give a big shoutout to my family and friends. Without their support and showing up to see what crazy ideas I have put down in a musical sense, I don’t know where I would be. Those moments in my life mean the world to me. And anyone else who has shown up and enjoyed the music I have shared deserve a shoutout as well!
