Meet Gilbert Holguin | Business owner

We had the good fortune of connecting with Gilbert Holguin and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Gilbert, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
I’ve been a lifelong VW fan, especially when it comes to the iconic VW busses. One day, I came across an ad suggesting a bus could be used as a photo prop, and that immediately sparked an idea. I let the thought simmer, did some research, and realized we could create something truly special—a vintage VW photo booth experience like no other.
When I first shared the idea with my wife, she thought I just wanted an excuse to buy a bus—and she wasn’t entirely wrong! But deep down, I knew we were onto something unique. With a lot of thought and prayer, we waited for the right moment. A year or two later, we found the perfect bus, transformed it into a one-of-a-kind photo booth, and officially launched Designed by Love Photobus at the start of 2020.
From our very first event, we could feel it—this was more than just a business; it was an experience. The nostalgia, the charm, the interactive fun—it created an atmosphere that people couldn’t get enough of. What started with one bus has now grown into two: our stunning 23-window VW bus and a beautiful white-and-off-white bay window bus, each offering a unique, vintage aesthetic that elevates any event.
But it’s not just about the busses—it’s about the full experience. We offer carefully curated lounge décor options that complement the aesthetic of each bus, creating a stylish and inviting setup for guests to enjoy. Our high-quality photo booth captures crisp, professional-grade images, and our friendly staff ensures every moment is fun, engaging, and unforgettable.
To take it a step further, we also offer a unique audio guestbook add-on—not just a phone, but a beautifully designed full setup that blends seamlessly with the look and décor of each bus. It’s a one-of-a-kind way for guests to leave heartfelt messages, making the memories even more special.
Whether it’s a wedding, corporate event, or private party, Designed by Love Photobus rolls in with more than just a photo booth—we bring an atmosphere, a memory-making machine, and a vibe like no other.”

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Aside from being a business owner of one of the coolest VW photo booth businesses around, I am also a director of operations for a government agency. I pride myself on creating a culture where people enjoy coming to work, feel appreciated, and genuinely care for one another. My philosophy has always been ‘You gotta love ‘em to lead ‘em.’ I believe that by leading with love, people feel valued, which empowers them to be their best. I’ve been in management for a little over two decades now, and while the journey has had its challenges, pouring into people has been one of the most fulfilling aspects of my career.
That same philosophy overflows into Designed by Love Photobus. Whether it’s our staff, our clients, or the guests at each event, we want every interaction to be rooted in kindness, joy, and appreciation. Just as I strive to create a positive workplace culture in my professional career, we’ve built our business on the foundation of making people feel special—whether they’re stepping into one of our VW photo busses, engaging with our team, or reliving the memories through our high-quality photos.
The journey hasn’t always been easy, but the lessons I’ve learned—putting people first, embracing challenges with faith, and constantly looking for ways to create a better experience—have shaped both my career and our business. At the end of the day, Designed by Love Photobus is about more than just a photo booth; it’s about creating moments of joy, nostalgia, and connection that people will cherish forever

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
If my best friend was visiting for a week, I’d make sure they experienced the true heart and soul of Los Angeles—the culture, the history, the flavors, and the energy that make this city unlike anywhere else. As a proud Boyle Heights native, I wouldn’t just take them to the typical tourist spots; I’d give them a real taste of what it means to live and breathe LA, starting with the neighborhood that shaped me.
We’d begin with a trip to Boyle Heights, where the roots of East LA run deep. Walking down First Street, we’d admire the murals that tell the stories of activism, community, and resilience. Of course, no visit would be complete without stopping at Al & Bea’s for a legendary bean and cheese burrito—simple, classic, and packed with flavor that has been a neighborhood staple for generations. While we eat, we’d watch the lowriders and VW’s cruise by, hear the sounds of cumbia and oldies floating through the air, and take in the pride of a community that represents the heart of LA’s Chicano culture.
From there, we’d venture into the rest of LA, blending the best of the city’s diverse scenes. We’d hit The Grove for some shopping and people-watching, then maybe go bowling at a classic LA alley for some friendly competition. A trip down Olvera Street would be a must to soak in the rich history of LA’s origins, grab some fresh churros, and take in the vibrant colors of Mexican culture.
For a change of pace, we’d take a drive up the Pacific Coast Highway, stopping in Malibu for ocean views, fish tacos, and a sunset that melts into the horizon. We’d visit Grand Central Market downtown for a foodie experience like no other, where flavors from all over the world collide in one electric space. And of course, a trip to LA wouldn’t be complete without catching a Lakers or Dodgers game—because sports in this city aren’t just entertainment, they’re part of our identity. GO DODGERS!
By the end of the week, my best friend wouldn’t just see LA—they’d feel it. They’d understand that this city isn’t just palm trees and Hollywood; it’s Boyle Heights, it’s East LA, it’s the rhythm of lowriders and VW’s rolling down the boulevard, it’s the fresh scents of tortillas, champurrado, and pan dulce filling the air, and it’s the sound of classic tunes playing from an old-school boombox at a Sunday hangout. More than anything, they’d feel the heart of LA—it’s about family, community, and laughter shared over a home-cooked meal, about stories passed down through generations, and about the unbreakable spirit that makes this city home. LA isn’t just a place—it’s a feeling, a culture, a way of life. And once it’s in your heart, it never really leaves you

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Our family business is all because of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ! So, first and foremost, a huge shoutout to God, who not only blessed us with the idea but has given us the strength, guidance, and wisdom to navigate this journey. Every challenge, every adjustment, and every creative idea along the way has been shaped by faith and trust in His plan.
A special shoutout to our amazing staff, who bring the Designed by Love Photobus experience to life at every event. Their energy, professionalism, and dedication ensure that every guest has an unforgettable time. From setting up the perfect shot to creating a fun and welcoming atmosphere, they are the heart and soul of what we do, and we are beyond grateful for them!
I also want to recognize our incredible clients—without them, Designed by Love Photobus wouldn’t be what it is today. Their enthusiasm, feedback, and support have been instrumental in refining our services, inspiring new offerings, and helping us grow into something even greater than we initially imagined.
Of course, none of this would be possible without my wife and family, whose love, patience, and encouragement have been the backbone of this business. From the late nights planning to the hands-on effort in bringing our vision to life, their support has been invaluable.
Lastly, to our friends, mentors, and the amazing vendors we’ve had the pleasure of working alongside—your advice, collaborations, and shared passion for creating unforgettable experiences have played a huge role in our success.
This journey has been one of faith, learning, and continuous improvement, and I’m beyond grateful for everyone who has contributed to making Designed by Love Photobus what it is today!”
