We had the good fortune of connecting with Chrishon Lampley and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Chrishon, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
Well, there were two motivators behind Love Cork Screw. As a former co-owner of an art gallery in Chicago’s South Loop, I was on the verge of losing everything after a terrible flood ruined the building and forced us to close. During that time, I was also working with well-known distributors in sales, so I was on the frontlines regarding newly released wines and consumer demands. I used these two stepping stones to plateau me into creating Love Cork Screw wines. My thought process was even through the challenges, I can leverage my knowledge and skillset to launch my own wine brand and fill in the gaps for what consumers were missing. I knew I would be able to use whatever platform I learned to inspire other entrepreneurs. And that was enough for me to get started.
What should our readers know about your business?
Love Cork Screw wines are set apart from others with our labels. Our labels are fun, whimsical, and not intimidating. So much so that other wine brands have started to imitate our labels. And that makes me proud. When I set out to launch Love Cork Screw, I wanted to touch lives through my story. I want to inspire others and break glass ceilings. As a Black woman, working in a White male dominant industry isn’t easy. I’m usually mistaken for the promotional girl and not the owner. Which means I have to work extremely hard to be taken seriously and to be heard. I’ve learned through perseverance and resilience that as long as I don’t give up, I will reach my goals.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Oh, best friend time will for sure be spent in Napa Valley! The amazing wines at Stag’s Leap and the delicious farm-to-table meals at Rutherford Grill are sure winners to keep us laughing, reminiscing, and loving each other.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My shoutout goes to both Ann and Lou Lampley, affectionately known as mom and dad! My parents have shown me the meaning of resilience, unconditional love, and the importance of entrepreneurship. I am forever grateful!
