We had the good fortune of connecting with Journee and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Journee, why did you pursue a creative career?
I pursued an artistic career simply because I couldn’t fathom doing anything else. I feel like I’ve known since I was about 6 years old, that music was my passion, however I didn’t go all in until after I graduated high school and went to college 6 hours from home. There was a lot of self discovery happening in college and I wasn’t enjoying school, nor did I have a real drive to complete it. I decided to really hone in on my artistry, and beautiful things have blossomed from it.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I would describe my music as modern R&B with remnants of the nostalgic 90’s/y2k R&B sound we all love. Although there are many talented emerging R&B artists, I feel like what sets me apart is my authenticity. I have always been most proud of how through all the ups and downs, I’ve managed to stay true to myself and the music I love to create. I think that is what has allowed me to flourish in this industry thus far. I feel as though there is this conception about the music industry being the “devil’s playground”, but nothing has brought me closer to God and grounded me more than this industry has. I mean, let’s face it… He’s the only reason I am still pursuing this dream of mine. I know this is my purpose and wonderful blessings and opportunities have come from me just following my heart and living within my purpose, but it hasn’t always been easy. For the longest time I lacked confidence in my talents, and I felt like I was the only one holding me back. It was such a hard time for me to get through because I felt like I had the ability to be this huge R&B superstar, but I was letting my doubts and fears get the best of me. Through the dark times, I’ve learned that I need to trust in God’s Plan and continue being this force to be reckoned with. If there’s anything I want the world to take from my story, it would be to continue being resilient through the trials and tribulations. NEVER give up! There are so many people waiting to hear and see an artist or creative like YOU.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
If my best friend was visiting the area, I would definitely take them to the beach, maybe Malibu or Manhattan beach. I would have to take them shopping and thrifting at the SilverLake Flea, or Rosebowl Flea. We would have to get some food of course. Depending on what they’re in the mood for, we could slide to COD or maybe Yamashiro. LA has so much versatility, so the options are endless!

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I’d LOVE to shoutout my friends and family for always encouraging me to chase my dreams. I also owe a shoutout to EJay for helping me develop as an artist and believing in my talent and helping me build confidence in myself and my artistry. I’ve learned so much from him, and consider him a huge part of who I am as an artist today.
