We had the good fortune of connecting with Jordan Mitchell and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Jordan, how do you define success?
I’m a bit literal. So, honestly, I’d define success as simply creating a goal and accomplishing it. For some, that could be making the varsity football team. For others, it could be winning a championship on that varsity football team — just for example. By the way, I’ve never played football, but that’s the example that comes to mind. Ultimately, we all can be successful, because every person is different — and has different goals and benchmarks that may achieve. Quitting is the opposite of success, not failing to achieve a goal.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
It’s still odd to consider what I do art. But if I were to describe it — I like for my writing to appeal to the ordinal person’s sensibilities. What do I want to see? What do people want to see? No, what will people PAY to go see. These are questions I ask before digging into any project. In terms of what sets my art apart, that’s tough to say — I try to infuse humor into pretty much everything I write, even horror. My professional experience has mostly been in multi-cam sitcoms (RAVEN’S HOME & iCARLY) so nowadays in my writing, I like to channel a lot from what I learned on those shows in terms of scene structure, jokes and brevity. Brevity on the page is big — people don’t like to read.

In terms of how I got here — I’ll. be brief. I went to LMU grad school for screen writing, then got into the Nick Writing Program in 2020, which lead to being staffed on the iCarly reboot. I got staffed on Raven’s Home through a cold call using LinkedIn, which still blows my mind. Then that darn writers strike happened — and now I also do stand up.

It wasn’t easy. It’ll never be easy. And the biggest lesson I’ve learned and still learning is just having perseverance and patience. The two P’s. And lastly, all I want the world to know is that I am a believer and God created me with a purpose and I hope everyone reading this can (if they haven’t already) realize their purpose too.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
As a writer I am a homebody, so this won’t be the best answer. For breakfast we’d probably go to Off Street Cafe in Cerritos, because they have great gluten-free waffles. Then we might hang out at the Grove — possibly hit the Santa Monica pier — get some tacos from one of those humble taco trucks. Ride bikes at Hermosa Beach. And then end the day at my favorite restaurant in LA — Sun Cafe.

After that, maybe we’d check out one of those 35mm films at Quentin Tarantino’s movie theater. Beverly Cinema! I’ve actually never been, so that’ll be a fun new experience for both of us.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I think both my father and my mother. Both have been immensely supportive in my creative and professional endeavors in their own way. My father and I mostly lean towards the writing end of things, talking about story, pitches, reading each other’s work and keeping each other sharp. On the other end, most recently, my mom has been supportive on the end of stand up comedy, which is a newer endeavor of mine. Really my entire family as a whole are very supportive — aunts, uncles, cousins, nephews. There’s no haters in my family, which is nice.
