We had the good fortune of connecting with Darren Held and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Darren, how has your work-life balance changed over time?
I have always been a workaholic (Thanks Dad!) It’s interesting being a creative person and a workaholic, because you delve hard into writing a screenplay, memorizing lines or starting a business. Unfortunately a side effect can be losing some of the joy that brought you to that creative art in the first. Being an entrepreneur, I don’t know if there’s any way around that, particularly in the beginning. As time has gone on, I’ve learned that balance is vital – in order to truly be present for your clients. I’ve found when I’m forced to break down and take time off, my perspective is back where it should be – on the humans, and not being perfect.

For the first 5 years of my business, I was waiting for the other shoe to drop. I didn’t really enjoy the success because I thought I was successful due to overworking. I trust my heart now, listen to my body, and let go of outcomes more than I used to. Surrounding yourself with a handful of people who love all your pretty and ugly parts, and getting sleep and exercise is key to everything else.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Held2gether, Improv for Life was created because I lived in Long Beach and just had to share this wonderful craft. I was training in improv to help my acting career. I found the benefits from improv went way beyond helping with performance and auditioning. It helped me take risks, become a better listener and let go of our perceived ideas of what an adult should be. So this business was created to bring this joy to everyday folks. Some had big challenges to overcome, some just needed to laugh, some wanted to become better speakers. It began with one class and quickly sprouted to 2, then 4, then a troupe, and here we are 15 years later.

I’m overjoyed to have created a space where people feel safe, yet receive top-notch training. Despite being one who encourages self-growth, I’m also a fan of good comedy, and never want to put an audience through something subpar. So we ensure every student feels positive about their growth, and confident in their skills when they’re ready to perform. I’ve seen incredible growth from everyone I’ve encountered in a class. It’s mind-blowing.

What I am most proud of is the community. You see 80-year olds hanging out with 20-years olds. There’s a bond and diversity you can’t find in most groups. It’s. harder to make friends as we get older, so seeing those relationships blossom is the biggest reward.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Huntington Gardens is a must! Does that count (Pasadena?) The place is so magical. The beauty, the greenery is transportative. I love showing the quirky neighborhoods most don’t think about when they think of Los Angeles – Abbott/Kinney, Los Oliveras Street. Of course showing off the best of my home city – Long Beach would be on my list.

There is so much great food in L.A.! I’m a fan of authentic Mexican cuisine, so there would be a million places to find that. Hitting the bars in WeHo is an unforgettable experience (maybe a drag show if there’s a good one…). Hitting up the Broad and Motion Picture museums would be high on the list as well.

A day shopping on Melrose followed by a night watching the Groundlings is great way to celebrate Hollywood!

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
There are so many lovely people in my life that have been vital in helping me build a creative business and community over the past 15 years. I would say there are 3 main forces that have carried me through life and helped me persevere through the thick and the thin.

First, my parents. I was constantly reminded by my Mom & Dad that I could do or be anything. Sometimes pursuing an artist’s life is not always music to the ears for the ones that worry about your livelihood. Nonetheless, my parents always supported my journeys as an actor, a business owner, and every odd job along the way.

Secondly, my spiritual practice. I practice a sect of Buddhism that believes we can make the impossible possible through wisdom, courage and compassion. I never would have had the guts to pursue my dreams in a recession, if it wasn’t for the powerful words of my mentors and local community. I still count on them and chant twice daily to encourage the best in everyone and overcome every challenge.

And finally, Groundlings School of Improv in L.A. They are truly the top tier of improv training and creating character. I feel like my education there prepared my for everything that came after. Truly grateful.
