Meet Sek Kim | Content Creator

We had the good fortune of connecting with Sek Kim and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Sek, what principle do you value most?
While laying out and pursuing your goals, I find that it’s easy to get lost in the process; forgetting why you started in the first place, what brought you to do what you’re doing, and what all of this is for. As a creative who wants to focus on his craft but also needs to think about practicals (like reach, growth, and monetization), I find myself in a dance between pushing for the pragmatic aspects that fuel inspiration while reminding myself I can enjoy the process. The principles I keep in mind to do this to the best of my ability are: 1. I’m going to die one day.
This sounds morbid, but hear me out. Zooming all the way out to get proper perspective is sometimes the best thing you can do to keep fear from getting in the way. Too afraid to approach strangers for a video idea? You’re going to be in the ground one day. Stressed because your content isn’t turning out the way you want it to? There will be a day when you’ll no longer be able to do this. No one gets out of this alive so might as well have fun and just go for it.
2. It’s not that serious.
The process of creation or progressing towards your goals doesn’t have to be painful. It can be fun. You just have to let it be.
3. No one cares as much as you think they do.
Everyone is concerned with how they’re being perceived and with their own problems. No one is actually thinking about you as much as you think they are. Realizing that is humbling because you realize you don’t matter as much to random people, but it’s freeing.
4. It’s better to be cringe and die trying than to be cool and never have tried.
My own self-judgment used to prevent me from doing the things I actually wanted to do (create), and I spent wasted years in my own head when I could have been living my life. Don’t make the same mistakes I did!

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I spent the last decade or so working in Cyber Security which helped to pay the bills but also in some ways kept me from pursuing my creative outlets. While I’m thankful for it, I’m pivoting the next season of my life to focus on content creation and learning how to express my ideas and learnings through an authentic language of who I am (harder said than done). The hardest hurdle that I came across was getting over myself in feeling like I was too old or that this pursuit was dumb and not worth doing. The proudest I’ve felt was when I was putting out content, even when I wasn’t completely satisfied with the results. This helped me getting over my fears of pressing the upload button which was keeping me from doing what I’ve always wanted to do.
The lessons I learned are the principles I laid out prior.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
AS SOMEONE WHO IS AN EXPERT AT ENJOYING LIFE, THIS IS WHAT I’VE DISCOVERED TO BE MY FAVORITE THINGS TO DO IN LA. (also if you agree, disagree, please dm me for a knuckle sandwich @sekplus or if you have better recs than me).
First things first. Foooooood.
-One of the best things to eat on this planet are the fried wontons at Hoy Ka Thai Noodle on Sunset Boulevard. Yeah, it’s not a proper entree but it’s worth getting if you’re in LA. It’s a 10/10. Do not sleep on this.
-I love a good mediterranean dish so I’m 100% bringing you to Dune in Atwater and getting the Hummus and Grilled or Fried Chicken plate. You will be upset at how good the food is here because it really is that good.
-Do you love chicken pot pie? Cause I do. You’ll likely check out Erewhon at some point to witness their perfect produce displayed and misted as if it was a movie set so while you’re there, get a chicken pot pie at the Erewhon hot bar. I’m also a fan of the Madchip Chocolate Chip cookie so grab one of those for dessert as well.
-Have to shout out a Korean spot, Hodori for the best Yukgaejang (육개장) in town. It’s a Korean spicy beef soup dish and they kill it here. I like to order it to my house when I’m coming back from traveling and need a good Korean hearty soup.
-Not getting tacos while you’re in LA is considered a criminal offense so you have to peep Estillo Tijuana Angels Tacos on Sunset. They make their own tortillas and everything is super authentic. Most of the workers don’t speak English so I learned a little bit of Spanish just so I could order here (I did not learn Spanish. I used Google Translate). Go at night and have the taco experience of your dreams.
-As a smashburger guy, I can’t get enough of Goldburger LA. They have multiple locations but the one in Los Feliz is where I frequent. You can’t go wrong with their California Classic or Goldburger. Highly recommend grabbing a bite then checking out Griffith Observatory at night.
Now that we’ve gone through my fave food spots, here some of my favorite things to do.
-If you’re into Jazz, LACMA has Jazz nights on Friday Nights which is worth checking. Very chill and wonderful.
-I would 100% be taking you to check out Hunting Library. The name is deceiving but it’s actually a massive garden and museum. Great for taking pics for your ig posts and just a beautiful spot all together.
-It’s necessary to be near the water at some point during your LA visit so I would likely take you to rent bikes and ride along Santa Monica and check out the pier. You get to see a different part of LA on the West Side and a little change of scenery is always nice.
-If you have time, visit the Comedy Store. You can check their schedule to see who’s performing and get exhaustion from incessant laughter (I didn’t know this was possible).
-Personally, I’m sober and lame, but if you want to grab drinks with a good amount of outdoor seating and wanna get weird, 4100 can be a lot of fun.
Hope this list helps you to enjoy LA better.
love ya,
