We had the good fortune of connecting with Cameron Newson and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Cameron, how do you think about risk?
I see risk as the cost of growth. Every meaningful move I’ve made in life and in my career has involved stepping into the unknown with faith that what’s on the other side will be worth it. From pursuing comedy and acting to walking away from comfort zones, taking risks has shaped me into someone who doesn’t wait for opportunities—I create them.

There’s fear in risk, sure. But there’s also freedom. The kind of freedom that comes from betting on yourself, even when the odds aren’t perfect. I’ve learned that progress doesn’t come without discomfort, and every time I’ve leaped, even if I stumbled, I landed further than where I started. Risk, for me, isn’t just part of the journey—it is the journey.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
My art lives at the intersection of truth, resilience, and real-life storytelling. I’m a stand-up comedian and actor, and everything I create comes from a place of lived experience, reflection, and the desire to connect with people on a deeper level. What sets me apart is the way I fuse pain with humor, turning moments of struggle into something that not only makes people laugh, but makes them feel seen.

It wasn’t easy getting here. I didn’t have a roadmap or a network when I started—I just had passion, grit, and a deep belief that I was called to this. I’ve driven hours for stage time, worked jobs that drained me just to fund the dream, and dealt with rejection from every angle. But I kept going.

I’m most proud of the fact that I stayed true to myself through it all. My voice hasn’t changed to fit trends—I’ve just sharpened it. I’ve learned that consistency beats hype, that vulnerability is a superpower, and that there’s always room at the table if you’re willing to build your own.

What I want the world to know is this: I’m not just performing—I’m creating space. Space for people to laugh, reflect, and walk away feeling just a little more human. That’s what my brand is about. That’s the story I’m living out every day.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
If my best friend came to LA for a week, I’d give them the real experience — not just the tourist trail. Day one starts at Venice Beach early, not just for the ocean but for the people watching — skaters, artists, wild personalities — LA in its raw form. From there, we’d hit up a classic taco truck, because nothing says welcome like street tacos with attitude.

Mid-week, I’d take them hiking up to Griffith for the skyline at sunset, just to remind them LA ain’t just concrete and chaos — it breathes. We’d dip into some lowkey underground spots — a spoken word night or an indie show in a tucked-away venue downtown.

Another day might be studio tour meets anime pop-up — if they’re into art, film, or fantasy, there’s always some niche corner of LA to dive into. I’d end at least one night with deep convos on a rooftop or parked somewhere with a view, just letting the city lights talk while we reset.

But the goal wouldn’t be just to impress — it’d be to show them the layers of LA. The grit, the gold, and the ghost stories hiding behind palm trees and billboards.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I want to give a major shoutout to the people who’ve poured into me, supported me, and helped shape the person I’ve become.

To my brother Shajuan ‘Desean’ Newson – your vision, drive, and belief in the bigger picture continue to push me further than I thought I could go.
To my mother Annettra Newson and father Warren Newson – thank you for the foundation, values, and strength you instilled in me from day one.
To my grandmother Joyce Menefee – your wisdom, warmth, and prayers have been the quiet force behind so many of my wins.
To my siblings Quadri Newson and Trajan Newson – I see you, and I carry our bond with pride.
To my brothers by choice – Shayne Cross, David Charleston, Larry Farmer, Quron Morrow, Trey Eanes & Joel Davis– your loyalty, insight, and energy have kept me grounded and motivated through every season.

I’m standing on the shoulders of giants, and I never forget that. Every step I take forward, I carry each of you with me.
