We had the good fortune of connecting with Twinkle Zaman and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Twinkle, do you have some perspective or insight you can share with us on the question of when someone should give up versus when they should keep going?
I think you have to truly be passionate about something to keep going. There’s a saying or quote that goes ‘anything worth having takes time’. I’m sure we’ve all heard it. But like how much time? People these days move fast. It’s with everything. Career, love, friendships….to me it almost feels like everyone is chasing the next best thing.

I don’t think I could ever give up writing. I finished writing my first novel ‘It’s Got To Be You’ early last year. That was extremely hard. After I finished I had a talk with myself and said ‘this is probably gonna be a one and done for me’.
Going through the book a million times there were moments I didn’t want to proceed. It felt overwhelming and sometimes unsettling. I could see it though so clearly the beautiful story. I knew how I wanted the story to start and how I wanted it to end. I just had to use that as my drive to get through the hard parts.

So going back to the question I truly believe if you see what’s meant to be you’ll keep going

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I started with poetry. I am now transitioning into women’s fiction. Poetry served a purpose. My last book is really special to me, but I just felt I had more to say. I felt I couldn’t fully accomplish that with poetry. What I do love about my last book ‘Love Notes- Single Hearts Affairs’ is you do get bits and pieces. Transitioning was a little bit more difficult than I thought. Writing poetry and curating a story are two different things. With poetry I could say whatever I wanted, it didn’t really have to make sense. When writing a story it has to make sense. You can’t bounce around….there has to be a flow.

I hope people fall in love with the characters. They have such personalities. I don’t want to give away the storyline just yet but it’s definitely one of those books you’ll be reading with your book club and probably be pulling your hair out.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I like to go away from big cities. LA is a vibe but I’m drawn to quieter places.

I’d definitely take my bestie to Malibu. I’m not sure what all is there still after the fires but Malibu Farm is my favorite breakfast spot. I love sitting on the pier and just people watching with a cup of coffee.

Nobu is also great for girls night and the sunsets are breathtaking.

I’m a big nature girl so a hike is a must obviously!

If you’re going with a bunch of girl friends/ people Malibu Beach Inn is beautiful for girls night in. You can stargaze while you pour yourself a glass of red.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I just want to thank everyone who has helped me navigate the writing process for my novel. I’ve gained so much knowledge during the process.
