Meet Cathy Chambliss, MFT | Marriage, Family Therapist

We had the good fortune of connecting with Cathy Chambliss, MFT and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Cathy, is your business focused on helping the community? If so, how?
I specialize in couples counseling, both married and unmarried couples. Many of the couples I see have children they are raising. I truly believe that children will be happier and more well-adjusted when they are raised in a home with two parents who get along, healthily handle conflict, communicate effectively, and show love to each other and their children. The way my business as a marriage and family therapist helps the world is to help the parents of children improve their relationship so that they model healthy relationship skills to their own children, which hopefully will help their children grow up to have healthy relationships in their lives. Basically, my hope is that by helping couples have healthier relationship skills, it will help their kids indirectly. I also help families work together in therapy to improve their relationships with their children when the family system is not dysfunctional. All the skills I teach clients can help them in all of their relationships.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
I started a private practice as a business owner 23 years ago when I became licensed as a marriage and family therapist. One of my internships before I was licensed was to work at a private therapy practice, where I learned all the details of what is involved in running a business. Once I was licensed, I leased my own office and started my business. Now, I employ six associates that I supervise, and they offer counseling at my private practice. I also see clients five days a week, both in person and via telehealth. One of the things I learned along the way is that it is very important to do your own self-care as a clinician. If you are overworked, tired, or burnt out, you cannot provide great services for your clients. It is very important to me to be fully present with my clients so they can get the most out of their sessions.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
My office is located in Hermosa Beach, although I see people from all over California via telehealth. Hermosa Beach and its neighbor Manhattan Beach is a wonderful place to visit. We are right on the coastline with a strand on the beach that is great for walking, cycling, roller skating, etc.. There are many great restaurants and stores to visit. One of my favorite pizza places is Beach Pizza in Manhattan Beach, which my family and I have been patrons of for many years. For a nice dinner, you might go to Nicks in Manhattan Beach or Zanes in Hermosa Beach. Another neighbor of ours in Redondo Beach has a wonderful new restaurant called Cal Surf, right off the strand. A fun activity is to bike to watch the sunset on the beach and then go to dinner. Manhattan Beach has a great shopping center called Manhattan Village with wonderful stores to visit. Hermosa Beach is one square mile so you really don’t need a car when visiting the city, you could just walk or ebike or bike everywhere!

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I want to shout out and appreciate all the clients who have trusted me to share the intimate details of their lives and allowed me the privilege of helping them improve their lives and relationships. I feel truly grateful that people have trusted me enough to guide them, sit with me in their pain and joy, and allow me to watch them have the courage to grow and improve themselves and/or their relationships.
