Meet Alice Castro | Movement and Audiovisual Artist

We had the good fortune of connecting with Alice Castro and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Alice, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking.
What is art without risk?
As an immigrant, one of the biggest risks I’ve taken is leaving everything behind at home to move to a new country and pursue my dreams. Ever since, taking risks has led me to new opportunities and outcomes I would’ve never imagined experiencing: meeting the people who are now my friends and family here and around the world, creating personal and impactful art, working at places I could only dream of as a kid, and learning a great deal.
As humans, we sometimes get stuck in our thoughts, in our actions, and in our bodies, and the only way out is to take a risk, even if it seems scary at times. Trying something new or unexpected that will open a new door of possibilities.
While not all risks work out the way we want, they will eventually lead us to the right place if we allow ourselves to live in them, and that is beautiful.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
My work begins from a radical impulse: to see and reveal life unposed. Whether through dance, portraiture, or film, I’m drawn to moments that exist between control and chaos. I compose with precision yet chase the spontaneous, finding beauty in tension: quiet fluidity in motion, candid beauty within pain, nature rendered as both cinematic and mysterious. My art aims to feel alive – less like a capture, more like a continuation of motion, emotion, and presence.
What I’m most proud of is that I never gave up on art. Even in the hardest moments, I always found my way back to it. Art has been my constant source of healing, a space where I can rebuild myself and make sense of the world. Being an artist has never been easy, and it still isn’t, but it’s what fulfills me the most. It’s my emotional safety net, the place I return to when everything else feels uncertain.
I wouldn’t be where I am today without the unwavering support of my family and friends. Each one of them holds a piece of the foundation that allows me to create. They remind me that art isn’t something I do alone; it’s something that grows through connection.
Along the way, I’ve learned to be patient: to listen, to fail, to reconstruct. I’ve learned resilience, to let go when I need to, to shape myself again and again, to stand for what I believe in, and to both hold others and allow myself to be held.
What I want the world to know about my work is that it’s meant to make people feel. Whether it’s a memory resurfacing, a sense of discomfort, love, fear, or curiosity – I want to awaken something real. Because feeling, in all its complexity, is what makes us human, and that’s the space where my art lives.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
That’s exciting, there are so many places! Here is a short list of some of my favorite spots in New York:
ACRE – a health conscious Japanese Restaurant with a mini front store.
Yoseka Stationary – a Japanese Stationery filled with little treasures.
969 NYC Coffee – a cozy eatery ran entirely by one man.
Music Inn World Instruments- a music shop with instruments from around the world, some dating over 100 years.
Warren Peace – an intimate cocktail spot with great food and b&w movie screenings.
LayeRhythm – an immersive mix of freestyle dance, live music, and audience energy that brings street and club culture to life.
American Museum of Natural History
The Metropolitan Museum of Art
Central Park (a must for anyone visiting NY)
DUMBO

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
“We have to know where we come from to know where we are going,” as I like to say in remembrance of all the people who help pave someone’s journey.
Shoutout to my family for the endless support, to Ainara Prieto for deepening my love for dance, its culture, and history, to Sun Kim for the hope and strength, to Princess Lockerooo for unlocking and embracing inner power, to Gwen Potter for seeing the spark since day 1, to each and everyone of my friends who are here or back in their countries and who I share the world with, and to every soul who I’ve connected with.
And, of course, wouldn’t be here without the work, knowledge, and art of all the OGs in the movement and community, who are far too many to name all here. Shoutout to them!
You are all part of this journey, my journey, and I carry all of you with me. THANK YOU.
