We had the good fortune of connecting with Roy Meals, MD and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Roy, as a parent, what do you feel is the most meaningful thing you’ve done for them?
Be available. Have dinner together as a family. Show up for school events. Develop mutual hobbies. let them see your work life.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I am an orthopedic surgeon and an avid outdoor enthusiast. I grew up in suburban Kansas City, attended Rice University (BA). and Vanderbilt University (MD). I performed my orthopedic surgery residency at Johns Hopkins Hospital and hand surgery fellowship at Massachusetts General Hospital.

Along the way, I served as a general medical officer (Major) in the USAF before joining the faculty at UCLA, where I continue to practice now part time and write about the musculoskeletal system.

I have served as editor in chief for the Journal of Hand Surgery and as President of the American Society for Surgery of the Hand.

Away from work, I have hiked, walked, and/or bicycled on all seven continents and ardently garden at home in Los Angeles.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Two days in San Pedro. The area is attraction-rich based on its history and location. In my book, Walking the Line, Discoveries Along the Los Angeles City Limits, I feature three areas as being attraction-dense. The bronze medal goes to Venice, the silver to Griffith Park, and the gold to San Pedro and Wilmington. Something for everybody there: nature preserve, beaches, Cabrillo Marine Aquarium, historic lighthouses, Korean Friendship Bell, nature walks, spectacular vies of seacoast and Catalina, historic ship museums, Maritime Museum, Fire Museum, two model railroad clubs, Saturday Morning Fish Market, Nike missile site, numerous memorials, murals, historic post office, etc, etc.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
