Meet Xavier Hemery | photographe

We had the good fortune of connecting with Xavier Hemery and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi xavier, have you ever found yourself in a spot where you had to decide whether to give up or keep going? How did you make the choice?
I believe that in photography, you should continue as long as it genuinely brings you joy and you truly love what you do. As long as the benefits — personal fulfillment, satisfaction, growth — outweigh the challenges, such as the investment of time, money, and energy, then it is worth pursuing.
That being said, it’s essential that this passion does not negatively impact your private life or your health. If your project starts to create imbalance in those fundamental areas, it’s important to step back and reassess.
However, if you truly believe that your project can, in the medium term, help you build a fulfilling personal life — where you can balance work, personal time, hobbies, and rest — then I think you should give it your all and never give up.
When you genuinely love what you do, perseverance becomes your greatest strength.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
What sets me apart from other photography artists?
I would say that what truly sets me apart is my deep sensitivity. I’ve had a very unconventional path, marked by intense life experiences — profound disappointments, but also great moments of joy. I am constantly reflecting on what makes me who I am, and everything I have lived through, both positive and negative, now fuels my work.
The sum of those experiences is something I try to express through my art. My goal is to convey genuine emotion in my images. Whether they are joyful or more melancholic, I want them to allow people to see something beyond the surface — to project their own story onto them and to truly feel something real.
What has been essential for me is choosing to create what I love, rather than what might please others. Naturally, that makes the journey more challenging, because developing your own style means stepping away from trends and expectations. But it is also what builds a strong identity.
What helped me get to where I am today is perseverance. The road was long and sometimes difficult, but it was worth it.
The most important lesson I’ve learned is that we are responsible for our own path. And above all, that true happiness comes from being yourself, without trying to fit into a mold — even if that mold appeals to the majority.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
If I had to take a friend somewhere to explore in California right now, I would head straight to Yosemite National Park and Sequoia National Park.
The idea would simply be to get lost there. Lose track of time, step away from the hectic pace of everyday life, and fully immerse ourselves in the wilderness. Walking without a fixed destination, breathing in the fresh air, listening to the silence, and taking in the raw beauty and grandeur of these landscapes.
These are places that remind you just how vast and powerful the world is, where you can feel both small and profoundly alive. Far from everything, far from the noise, just connected to what really matters.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I would like to express special thanks to two women who are essential in my life.
First, to my wife, Kasia who is also a photographer. Her artistic eye, her sensitivity, and her deep understanding of this profession are a real strength for me. A creative path like photography requires a great deal of time, energy, and sometimes uncertainty, and the fact that she shares this passion makes her support even more meaningful. We grow together, exchange ideas, inspire one another, and that plays a fundamental role in my development.
And of course, I would also like to thank my grandmother. She is an incredible woman who lived through difficult times, in a different era when things were very different. She migrated from former Yugoslavia to France, and that was not always easy. Despite everything, she always maintained a deep love for creativity and art. From a very young age, she introduced me to painting, drawing, and everything related to artistic expression. If I have developed this artistic sensitivity, it is largely thanks to her. I would like to dedicate an important part of my journey to her.
