We had the good fortune of connecting with Lucas Cury and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Lucas, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
It came from a mix of passion and instinct. Sports have been a huge part of my life, and I reached a point where I wanted to share that experience with others in a more meaningful way. Starting playing Beach Tennis and the academy felt like the natural next step, turning something I love into something that could impact other people’s lives.

What should our readers know about your business?
Starting a beach tennis academy in the U.S. was definitely not easy. It’s still a relatively small sport here, with limited infrastructure, no dedicated arenas, and a strong dependence on weather conditions. There were moments especially during the winter and rainy periods when things were really challenging.

I actually started with just a group of six students. From there, it’s been a journey of persistence, belief, and a lot of hard work. Giving up was never an option for me. I truly believed in the sport and in the experience it offers, and I wanted to share that with others.

What sets us apart is not just the coaching, but the environment and the energy we create. Beach tennis is more than a sport it’s fun, it’s social, it’s a great workout, and it happens in what I believe is the best setting in the world: the beach. We focus on making people feel welcome, helping them improve, and making sure they enjoy every moment on the court.

One of the things I’m most proud of is helping grow the sport in the U.S. Being part of that process introducing new people to beach tennis and watching a community form around it has been incredibly rewarding. It really feels like we’re building something from the ground up.

Along the way, I’ve learned that consistency and resilience are everything. You have to adapt, stay patient, and keep showing up even when things don’t go as planned. Building something meaningful takes time.

What I want people to know about my brand is that it’s driven by passion and purpose. This is more than a business it’s a mission to grow the sport, bring people together, and create an experience that goes beyond just playing. We’re building a community, and that’s what makes it special.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I would definitely take my friend hiking in Malibu on a hot day to enjoy nature and get a good workout. A necessary stop would be the beach especially on a Saturday at Manhattan Beach to make the most of our experience playing beach tennis plus going into the ocean. Nearby, there’s a place called El Sombrero that serves the best burritos and Mexican food. If they asked me about nightlife, I’d suggest Venice for sure I love the bar and restaurant vibes in that area.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
A big part of my journey wouldn’t have been possible without Beach Tennis Association – Hermosa Beach (BTA). They’ve been there since the beginning—supporting me, opening doors, and helping me take each step forward. I’m really grateful for everything they’ve done for me along the way.
