We had the good fortune of connecting with Kayla Paquette and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Kayla, how does your business help the community?
Behavioral Horizons ABA helps the community by providing evidence-based interventions that support individuals in increasing their independence at home, in school, and within the community. We focus on teaching meaningful skills, including communication, social interaction, daily living skills, and self-advocacy, that help individuals participate more fully in everyday life.

We also work closely with caregivers, providing them with the knowledge and tools they need to support their neurodivergent children beyond therapy sessions. By empowering families and building practical skills, we help create greater access to community experiences, opportunities, and relationships. Our goal is to ensure that neurodivergent individuals can navigate the world with confidence and have the same opportunities to learn, grow, and participate as anyone else.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I began my career in ABA in 2018 as a Behavior Technician and became a BCBA in 2022. Over the years, I have worked in home, clinic, and school settings, and even had the opportunity to volunteer as a BCBA abroad in Belize.

The journey to becoming a BCBA and starting my own business was not easy, but I was fortunate to have an incredible support system and mentors who helped guide me along the way. One thing that sets me apart is that my connection to autism extends beyond my professional experience. I grew up with a family member with autism who received ABA services, so I understand the impact autism can have on an entire family. That personal perspective helps me connect with the families I serve and approach my work with both professional expertise and genuine empathy.

The biggest lesson I’ve learned is that meaningful growth often comes from taking chances and stepping outside your comfort zone. I’m proud to have built a career and business centered on helping individuals and families reach their goals and thrive in their communities.

In addition to working in the field professionally, I published a children’s book “Sometimes It’s Hard”, a story about a girl navigating life with a neurodivergent sibling. This has helped tie my personal and professional experiences into one resource to help children and adults connect to spark meaningful conversations.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My son was the biggest reason I decided to start my own business. I wanted the flexibility to spend more time with him while continuing to make a difference in the lives of the families I serve. I also owe a huge thank you to my husband for supporting me throughout this journey and encouraging me to take the leap. And I have to give credit to my dad, who years ago told me that one day I would own my own business. His confidence in me stuck with me, and now that prediction has become a reality.
