We had the good fortune of connecting with Dana Gaydon and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Dana, how does your business help the community?
It’s easy to look at photography as an unnecessary luxury, vain even. But I want to challenge that. I help people, especially women, by giving them a safe place to show up. I dive deep into their brand personalities and translate their best qualities into visual elements that tell their story. I’m no doctor out here curing cancer, but in a way I’m curing the spiritual cancer that infects so many women: fear of being seen.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Photography has been part of my life for over 20 years, but what I create today is about so much more than taking beautiful pictures. My work sits at the intersection of art, storytelling, color, and human connection.
What sets me apart is my ability to translate personality into visuals. My inspiration is color psychology, personality frameworks, fashion, vintage aesthetics, and the unique energy within each person.
It doesn’t matter what I’m photographing; my goal is always the same: to create images that feel real. I love that my work helps create more confidence in showing up. For many people, being photographed can feel scary, but I love creating an experience that helps people relax, have fun, and see their own value and beauty.
One of the most profound lessons I’ve learned is that the act of being photographed can be transformative in itself. I’ve seen it happen hundreds of times. People often come to a shoot thinking they need to become more confident, more successful, or more established before they deserve to be seen. But something shifts during the experience. The photos become evidence of who they are becoming, not just who they have been. In many ways, the camera acts as a portal between a person’s current reality and their next chapter.
I’ve learned that sometimes we don’t wait until we feel ready. Sometimes we become ready by taking the photo.
Today, I am the photographer and creative director behind Modern Joy Studio, creating colorful, personality-driven imagery for brands, businesses, and individuals who want to stand out in a meaningful way. My work is rooted in joy, self-expression, and helping people show up confidently in the world.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
If my best friend were visiting for a week, we’d split our time between Orange County and Palm Springs because together they capture so much of what I love: creativity, color, design, great food, and adventure.
We’d start in Old Towne Orange with coffee and vintage shopping, wandering through antique stores. Possibly some estate sales. Finding unqiue vintage treasures is my favorite.
We’d spend an afternoon at the OCMA museum, followed by dinner somewhere with great ambiance and people-watching.
Midweek we’d head to Palm Springs. We’d spend our mornings getting coffee and thrifting, exploring colorful neighborhoods, admiring mid-century architecture, then spend afternoons at the pool. And of course we’d stop for photos at iconic hotels and design-forward spaces.
What excites me most isn’t necessarily checking off famous attractions—it’s discovering places filled with personality. I love colorful businesses, artists, makers, vintage collectors, and creative entrepreneurs. Those are the people and places that inspire me most, and they’re often the ones that make a trip special.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I need a lot of support and help! Besides prayers, meditation, therapy, hypnosis and friends.. I want to give a shout-out to my coaches Emily Merrell and Renee Dominquez for their amazing coaching support!
