Meet Honey Ant | Artist & Songwriter

We had the good fortune of connecting with Honey Ant and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Honey Ant, what led you to pursuing a creative path professionally?
I’ve always loved art. Music, fashion, muesums, etc. But, I growing up it never seemed like a tangible reality to have a career in it. But while in NYC I picked up a second job as a runner at a recording studio and got my first glimpse into a career as an artist. It was also around the time that streaming and Soundcloud were blowing up, which I think increased accessibility and removed a lot of gatekeepers.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I think you should create the art that you need in the world. Last year I was feeling bummed that the music landscape didn’t reflect what I saw as such a tumultuous time in our society. Between the US-funded Israeli genocide in Palestine, ICE kidnapping legal US residents, inflation fueled by corporate greed… the moment felt too existential to want to write music about the problems in my life that seem much smaller in comparison.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I’ve waited my whole life for this question. Day trip to Laguna or Manhattan Beach, Jazz Electric on a Tuesday, stroll the Sunset area of Echo Park (hit up Bar Flores, Low Boy and Echo Park Lake – only during the week though), pick a random set to see at the Comedy Store, dinner at Jones Hollywood, drinks on a DTLA rooftop (Perch, Broken Shaker, RIP Ace Hotel), hit the Crossroads on Sunset in Silver Lake, Quarters in K-Town (grab a drink at Normandie Club while you wait for your table), hike to the Griffith Observatory, Grand Central Market, grab sushi and cocktails in Little Tokyo, go out for drinks in the Arts District, people watch on the Venice Boardwalk. And shoutout to The Bloc LA, I love that place.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I want to give a shoutout to one of my producers, Blake Lite. We met last year and our conversations really encouraged me to feel comfortable making music that was political and aggressive. Shoutout to my friends Shashi Mostafa, Sophia Leal, Donovan Griffin, who all help me feel more secure in being a creative… they’re also all great directors and visual creatives!
