We had the good fortune of connecting with Valerie Lynn and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Valerie, is there something you believe many others might not?
A piece of conventional advice, or what I consider the worst advice I ever got in the United States is that, that I should not begin or even think about my recovery after pregnancy until after the six week medical exam. I believe this directly led to an imbalance of my post-baby hormones resulting in my experience of postpartum anxiety and OCD (obsessive compulsive disorder) for nine months.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
I am a Post-Pregnancy Wellness Specialist, a BODY DOULA. You’ve probably heard of birth or postpartum doula but not a body doula, this is what sets me apart. While everyone focuses on the baby, I focus on the mother. I create a detailed postnatal recovery plan for the first six to eight weeks, then beyond, that includes personal care – womb, perineum, abdomen, core, nutrition, meals, hormonal checks, support roles and so on. My priority is the mother when she is not her own priority. I help a mother heal her body from day one, the day she gives birth so she can have a healthy, strong, hormonally balanced recovery. It is all done naturally and is baby friendly. I opened the Post-Pregnancy Wellness Boutique of Los Angeles in 2019 as I represent an all natural line of amazing eco-postnatal recovery products from Malaysian in the U.S. My brand is Eco-Postnatal Care. Did I mention that Malaysia has the lowest rates of postpartum mood disorders in the world at just 3%? Flip it and this means they have the highest success rates in the world. At the boutique I hold workshops for expecting parents and birth professionals. I also hold my workshops at the Malaysian Permanent Mission to the United Nations in New York City. The challenge I’ve faced is that western cultures do not place any importance, nor is there any reliable body of knowledge, on the recovery of a woman after pregnancy, childbirth, miscarriage, stillborn and termination. I am re-educating people on these topics.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Since my jam is Southeast Asia I would invite people to visit in July when the Lotus festival take place. This is the largest festival of Southeast Asian cultures to happen in the U.S over a weekend. It is epic! Food, music, games, shopping, services and much more. The next day I we would go to Thai town for an adventurous treat in this gastronomy area of town. I would take them to Thailand Plaza my favorite market, Silom Supermarket for an epic food shop and then a browse around the combination herbal farmacy / bookstore next to it, Dokya. Then we would stroll up the street and have full spa day with an authentic Thai massage, facial, mani/pedi. To round out the day we would stroll up the street a little further a choose one of the restaurants, such as Thai Patio, Sanamluang Cafe or Lacha Somtum restaurant for a heavenly Thai meal. That’s just in the Thai area of town, there are other areas Koreatown, Little Tokyo, Chinatown, Little Saigon and so on. I get my Vietnamese food fix at Let’s Pho, in Sherman Oaks, run by a lovely Vietnamese family. When I tuck into a bowl of steaming, fragrant beef pho each bite, takes me back to my neighborhood of Southeast Asia. The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
There is a whole country located in exotic Southeast Asia that deserves a shout out when it comes to my story. It is Malaysia, and it’s wonderful people, culture, knowledge, and collective mission that every Malaysian women is entitled to a strong, healthy recovery from pregnancy and childbirth of which the result is a deep, beautiful postnatal heritage. I have been living in Malaysia since 2000. I have been going back and forth from Los Angeles and Brooklyn since 2012. We still have a family property there and will forever reside part of the year in this warm, welcoming country. It is truly one of my homes.
