Meet Jaclyn Silverman: Artist & Graphic Designer

We had the good fortune of connecting with Jaclyn Silverman and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Jaclyn, we’d love to start by asking you about lessons learned. Is there a lesson you can share with us?
The most important lesson, for me, is that it’s vital to create work that is genuine to my intrinsic interests and not solely based on what I think other people want me to create. I was focused on the latter for the first year or so of my business and it was very limiting. I felt trapped to make art that wasn’t a true expression of my soul- that I needed to make art that was propaganda. It was the solitude of the pandemic that led me to deeply reflect on my art and what I want it to be to realize it was time for a shift. An artist’s creative shift/evolution is never complete, but I definitely know now that it’s extremely important to listen to your own voice above others when crafting works.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I’m actually in the midst of an artistic/brand transformation, so stay tuned! But as far as to what has aided me get to where I currently am in my artistic journey, it is without a doubt my incredible support system of family and friends. I am deeply comforted knowing that I have multiple people that I can talk to about new ideas, obstacles, etc. Also, my business wouldn’t be ongoing if it wasn’t for the people that have supported me by buying my products! Thank you to everyone that has a little piece of JSX. What I’d like to share about my story- I have always been a creative person, I’ve been drawing and performing since I was a toddler! But I only started pursuing art seriously a couple years ago because of the fear of failure. This is not an uncommon reason why so many people do not pursue their dreams, so to anyone reading this with a dream they aren’t chasing: go for it! You miss 100% of the shots you don’t take!

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
We’d be going on all the hikes in Palos Verdes for sure! I would also be hitting the beach with the homie in my current city- Hermosa Beach. My favorites spots in HB for food are Hermosa Mexican Cuisine (the carnitas tacos are on another level) and Zane’s, but I’d definitely also be taking my friend on a food adventure throughout Downtown LA while they visited. And, if they were having an exhibition while my bud was in town, I’d take them to my favorite art gallery: Shockboxx. It’s this small hole in the wall spot near my apartment, and one of my favorite parts of living in Hermosa Beach. I hope to have some of my pieces in their shows one day! All other down time would be spent watching movies and taking my dog to the park and on walks down the Hermosa Beach strand. Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I dedicate this shout out to my amazing parents!! To my mom- thank you for taking me to art classes all throughout my youth and pushing me to stay involved in the arts. Also, thank you for passing down your artistic talents to me. Painting with you is one of the purest memories I have. To my dad- thank you for reigniting my pursuit of art as a career by adding me to the graphic design team in our company! I had all but given up on becoming an artist until you gave me the nudge and support I so desperately needed. Y’all are my greatest supporters and I am eternally grateful for everything you’ve done to help me get to where I am today.
