We had the good fortune of connecting with Ameera Perkins and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Ameera, can you share the most important lesson you’ve learned over the course of your career?
The most important lesson I’ve learned in my career is that discipline will get you anywhere. As an adolescent, I was a procrastinator. Turning in late work in highschool, waiting till the last minute to do work in college, but as I became an adult I realised that we are free to sculpt and create our realities. There is no one telling you what time you have to wake up, what time you have to eat, when and why you should workout. As a kid, I wanted so badly to be an adult because I was restricted by the discipline my parents instilled. As an adult, I see why it’s important to wake up, make your bed, meditate (whatever you do) ect because those are the things that charge your day which in return makes you more productive and present. Setting goals, imagining them and sticking to the discipline needed to achieve them is important.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I am a Singer/ Songwriter, Author and owner of Vanity Teeth Beauty Bar. I have been singing professionally for 10 years. I started out studying music at an art school in Cincinnati, OH called School of Creative and Performing Arts. Vanity Teeth Beauty Bar was started when I realized that many of my colleagues and friends in the entertainment industry relied on lasting impressions when booking a gig, going on an audition or doing a public speaking engagement. And I thought, “What’s more lasting than a beautiful smile?” Some of the lessons I learned along the way were to cancel out fear and to stay in a state of gratitude. When we remain grateful and present we allow great things to appear in our lives. Fear is paralyzing so if you can get past the fear and insert gratitude; every chance you take feels like an opportunity to be better.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I would start the day at Fryman Canyon in North Hollywood. It’s tranquil and peaceful. Since it’s in the valley you won’t be overwhelmed with as many people as other trails. The sites are beautiful and it overlooks Burbank and The Valley . I would then grab breakfast at The Pancake Factory in North Hollywood. For lunch, I would go to Ackee Bamboo in Leimert Park and order their jerk chicken or brown stew chicken. Lastly, I would go to Simply Wholesome to browse the herb section (one of my favorite past times)!

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would like to shouout Black Lives Matter and all the people around the world who are standing for equality.
