Meet Alex Rose | Artist, Film Maker, Photographer…

We had the good fortune of connecting with Alex Rose and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Alex, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking
Risk is always a factor, especially when creating. Risks can be scary, and motivating at the same time. When I’m working on a painting or a set, there is always a risk to reward ratio. But when you’re designing a production its your responsibility to take on the risk of bringing your creative ideas to reality, same as making art…

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Working in Hollywood, isn’t as glamours as people think, I’ve worked long hours on tons of jobs that weren’t the best. Working in the Art Department has taught me to approach everything I do a certain way. Being on set trains you to be ready for any changes and demands. Being an artist, sometimes on set you have to kill your ego, get creative and work with the job. So I’ve learned to take direction. I believe what separates myself from others, is my drive. I have been fortunate enough to be able to work with inspiring directors like Antione Fuqua & Ty Hodges. On projects such as an Emmy award winning documentary about Muhammad Ali on HBO and a movie named Venus As A Boy which is coming soon. Growing up being an artist I have always felt ” set apart ” from others because all of my art is one of one. I grew up doing a lot of graffiti and fell in love with spray painting. The older I’ve gotten my styles have evolved from lettering into abstract design work. I love Layering paint and experimenting with colors. I’m also partially color blind so it makes it all the more interesting hearing what people see in my paintings.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Start off the week with a great breakfast, an Eggs Benedict at Marmalade in Santa Monica. Then a hike in the Pacific Palisades with my dog ‘Jack’. The view from the ridge line is stunning, and I love to fly my drone around the mountains while throwing the ball for my dog. There is no better crown jewel to Los Angeles than a drive up PCH (Pacific Coast Highway). It does not matter how long you have lived here the shear beauty of mother nature is laid out right in front of you. The next day I’d head to Venice to a Mariscos spot. I love ceviche, I have probably tried every place on the west side. As the sun sets we’d take a drive to downtown to see the old side of Los Angeles. I have numerous friends who are always having exhibits, which help fill the artistic side of me. I love the DTLA Arts district all of the murals give me inspiration. later that evening, we stop by my favorite butchers’ shop (A Cut Above) in Santa Monica to pick up some memorable steaks and some chimichurri, head home to create a feast, and swim in the pool.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Rob Pearson, he is an incredible Production Designer, who took me under his wing when I was first starting out. I’m a 4th generation film maker, I grew up on set and in the industry. My father is a producer, our family consists of several roles you could find on set. Rob being one of my fathers dear friends, gave me a chance to Art Direct my first film.. I’d like to thank Rob Pearson for opening so many doorways for my career and allowing me to grow into the person I am today on set. And for that I am grateful.
