We had the good fortune of connecting with Ashley Cole and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Ashley, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking.
Taking risks is the most important part of being creative. It is the crucial point between staying in a comfort zone and challenging yourself to try something new. As an abstract artist who’s style has changed over the years, taking the risk to create from within vs what may be familiar has made my work more authentic. The most difficult part for some is making the decision to take a leap knowing the outcome could be the opposite of what is expected. I believe that if the risk isn’t death then take it. Especially when it comes to art. Be fearless when it comes to trying new things, learning new things and incorporating them in your art. You will find out the outcome isn’t as bad as you imagined.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
The pieces that I create are pictorial images of my subconscious.. my process is very organic and I allow my energy to guide me. Most of my work have messages to the viewer and the goal is always to uplift and inspire through color and through texture. I am at a point where I look at my work and I am proud. Getting to this point in my career took allot of digging internally. Shifting from creating what I felt people wanted to see, to creating what I feel inside. If I’ve learned anything on this journey, it is to trust your instincts. Separate yourself from anything or anyone that does not serve you so that you can elevate. And surround yourself with like minded individuals. I want the world to know that I have overcome some really dark times and Art saved my life.. I will not stop creating, I will not stop pursuing my dreams under any circumstances and My art will be visual representation of just that.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I would definitely get tickets to The broad Museum and the MOCA. I would take her to the fish bar one of my favorite restaurants, and to some of the local beaches to walk the pier
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Every Monday Morning I listen to The Goodnews Radio station to start my week The host Keith Goodnews shares very inciteful and encouraging information that I like to apply to my career an every day life. My children are also my biggest inspiration they give me the drive to continue pursuing my passion. My very supportive group of friends Tiyon Johnson, and Dominika G.
