We had the good fortune of connecting with Ashley Tani and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Ashley, what is the most important factor behind your success?
I would love to say that the success of myself/my brand is my talent but that’s really not the case. Haha. There are so many talented makeup artists out there. But what I believe set me apart are my work ethic and the bond I share with my clients. I spend 10+ hours per week corresponding with potential and long-term clients- some of which have become life-long friends. I genuinely enjoy my job, half of which is being personable and engaging with people, and I believe that comes through to everyone I work with. It doesn’t matter if you’re the best in the game, if you’re rude or hard to work with, people won’t work with you. Be kind to everyone, work hard, and see how far you’ll go.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I am a freelance makeup artist specializing in weddings, special events, and commercial photo/video. When I look back on my career, I am the most proud of how hard I’ve worked and the risks I’ve taken to get here today. I am naturally a very introverted person and the nature of this business has you meeting new people everyday and being constantly out of your comfort zone. At the beginning, I truly didn’t think I could overcome this but with time, I have felt a little more comfortable everyday. One of the hardest lessons I had to learn was that some people are just not good people. There will people who try to tear you down to build themselves up. Some artist think it’s a competition with only one winner. It’s hard to accept but once you do, it will be so much easier to rise above it. I want to be known as a good makeup artist but more importantly, I want to be known as a good person. I want each of my clients to feel seen and cared for and leave feeling better than when they came.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
There are so many amazing food places and things to do all over LA. Here are a few of my favorite areas to hang out and things I love to do. MID-CITY/MIRACLE MILE: – The Grove: Great place to shop, hangout, and probably see a celebrity. – Roscoes Chicken and Waffles (Pico location) – Gus’s World Famous Fried Chicken – LACMA (Los Angeles County Museum of Art) LITTLE TOKYO/ARTS DISTRICT: – `Zinc Cafe & Market – Kouraku – Cafe Gratitude (Vegan) – JANM (Japanese American National Museum) – Eat Drink Americano – KTCHN DTLA (weekend pop-up) – Japanese Village Plaza (lots of different food/small shops) – Salt & Straw RANDOM FAVORITES: – C & O CUCINA – Killer Noodle Tsujita Ramen – Superba Food and Bread – Wanderlust Creamery
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I would love to give a shoutout to E2 Beauty. They are a wedding/special event hair and makeup team and salon. This is where my journey started and I owe so much of my career to them. They hire so many talented artists and have helped grow into successful careers of their own.
