We had the good fortune of connecting with Christina Kai- Marks and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Christina, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking.
There’s a quote “ if you are not willing to risk the unusual, you will have to settle for the ordinary.” This quote sets true and deep for me. I never wanted to settle for “ ordinary“ So I always push myself to overcome fear/ failure for not succeeding and taking multiple risk In my life. From becoming a professional MMA fighter and starting that journey 2 weeks after having my son. To letting go and moving away from a stable and good financial job of a financial aid director of a school to pursuing and diving in headfirst into becoming a personal trainer/coach and devoting more of my time to my practice of an MMA fighter. Which led me a job with the ufc gym as well as being on the ultimate fighter season 26 show. Traveling the world fighting in big shows and leading a fight on pay-per-view ( which I won second round t.k.0) . And now currently Taking my next risk with my career with personal training/coaching and stepping away from my corporate gym I’ve been with for seven years and starting my own brand/business. Xmarks the spot fitness!
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
My Business / Brand is called XMarks the spot fitness. I’ve been a trainer/coach for about 9 years now. It Started off with just family and friends, showing them what I learned from my Years as an athlete Learning health and fitness that way. To me landing a job with the UFC Gym and getting certified. With my time with the corporation I got some good foundation ,roots and knowledge through the years. While stocking up my resume with certifications and professional achievements. With all that it lead me to deciding to start my own business/ brand. This wasn’t an easy decision, It’s a huge risk. I’ll be leaving benefits, a place that’s gives me clients etc. However I’ve been an athlete since I was 5 years old with track and field as my main sport being a D1 athlete to becoming a professional athlete in the world of mixed martial arts ,receiving different certification in the fitness world. I’ve been Educating myself and learning different types nutrition factors benefit With weight goals etc. I started developing the love and dedication for health and fitness at such a young age. which leads me to now going on 35 years old I have cumulative abundance of knowledge to spread/ teach to others. I am always making sure I’m educating myself and staying current. I believe what separate me from other trainer/ coaches is I’m more than a “one trick pony ” I can train anyone from weight loss, muscle gain, straighten & conditioner , speed and agility, performance improvement in any sport , I can teach you boxing, Muay Thai, Brazilian Jiu Jits, mma, self defense. Not only that I can help people achieve these goals and teach them but I understand it in a deeper level because I have done it all.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
If anyone knows me they know I’m a outdoors person. So if you’re coming to visit me in my hometown make sure you have some comfortable clothes on because you’re going to see the city and some highlights by foot. We are going to Start off by visiting liberty Station and walk around and stepping into all the interesting and fun little shops they have in their while enjoying whatever type of food you can think of from all around the world/ cultures. Later on that night we can relax by watching a movie at The Lot In the most comfortable reclining chairs and drinking some wine. The next day we would wake up early for a hike hit up tree sisters because when we get to the end there’s three amazing waterfalls and cliffs we can jump off! On Sunday we would have to hit up the farmers market in hill crest with Live music and different vendors and so many selection of food for vegans it’s a must! I’m sure we have been eating a lot so I would set up a fun training workout with me and my other friends from town to cut some weight off at mission beach. Since we are already there we can hit up the roller coaster and maybe some laser tag after , Just in case someone brought some kids we can entertain them as well.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
There’s so many people in my life Such as family & friends that I am so grateful and blessed to have in my corner. From my parents always showed support and always routing me on ,to taking care of my son if I had long practices or if I had to be away for fights. To my sons father who picked up the slack with our son when I had to be away for fights or when I left for two months without any contact to be on the ultimate fighter show..To now who is very much encouraging me and pushing me to open up my own gym. I couldn’t ask for a better coparent . To My friends who would understand that I just couldn’t be at every event or outing because I had flights coming up or I was super focus and couldn’t be around but was still there when I needed them. I even have one particular friend ( teresa) she would sit in the sauna to help me cut weight. She would even in the beginning of my career drive me to Weight Ins because I was Depleted and I couldn’t do so myself. To my wife who is always down for my crazy adventures and journeys in my life and all she says is “let’s do it, I got you”. To my late grandmother who helped raise me and instilling in me The motto ”never use the words you can’t do it , because you can!” But who I have to recognize the most and give my biggest shoutout to would have to be my son. Having a mother who’s a fighter / professional athlete I know it wasn’t easy. From my early morning and long nights, me cutting weight , being away for times out of the Month, not making every sporting games. Changing careers and moving him and starting from scratch. He gave the most support and encouraged. He would be with me at practices , he would help me with my weight cut and telling me “ you can’t eat that” lol when I asked for his thoughts about me going away and having no contact with him for 2 months And leaving to be on a show. He told me to go and he understood and he was happy for me. And now he’s so excited for me to start my own business and telling me you’re going to do so good. He’s been my Rider die from the beginning to end. He’s been my biggest influence and support system in all my risk taking and success in my life. I am truly blessed for having such an understanding son. I know for sure it wouldn’t have been possible with out his love and support from him.
