I’ve been recording quotes in marker on a cheap ikea bookshelf half my life. Last week I took photos of the quotes on the bookshelf and then proceeded to destroy it to make room for my plants. Others’ thoughts do not belong to me. I’ve repeated this to myself in the mirror for the past two years now. I needed to hear this affirmation when I was a kid, instead, I was thrown into the deep end of a pool where thoughts and rules (that were not my own) held me below the surface. I guess it would be something like “Just finish the race!”. Because if you never finish the race you can never win. Whatever winning means to you.
